I truly hated this book. It was recommended to me as I like others in this genre quite a bit — hendrix, king, hill, etc — but wow did i find this almost unbearable. The ending especially pissed me off as it came out of nowhere. The only good thing I can say about it is that it made me want to watch Scream again.

i wouldn’t call this a horror novel but i don’t know what i would call it. took a chance on it and ended up liking it quite a bit — would make a stellar tv show

Unbearable protagonist

I had to stop listening because it was so frustrating listening to the protagonist be so cruel and resentful of her mother after learning that her mother was straight up abducted. maybe she gets better but after hours of listening i gave up. i want to know what happened but not at the expense of my sanity!

hidden gem

reminded me of stephen king with its cast of small town characters and personalities. this is definitely a hidden gem — don’t let the generic title fool you. this is a blast! tons of wit, excellent arcs and a plot twist i didn’t see coming! i think fans of stephen king (or joe hill) and grady hendrix would like this.

barely any monsters or fantasy

basically many hours of listening to a protagonist refuse to communicate with the people around her and an extremely awkward romance with a love interest who is repeatedly described as very ugly. i actually was really interested in the house and the monsters and those are honestly more like footnotes (speaking of footnotes — those kind of disappear as the book goes along, huh?) in a boring love story. this does not reflect the horror of poverty and jeez even the slavery component — much touted by the author in press — is barely present in the narrative. what a huge disappointment.

not my favorite

i was expecting something more adult; this seemed somehow written for kids despite the inclusion of (…many) marital problems. i also found the characters sort of repetitive and confusing, and i listened for about 70% before giving up in frustration. i bought this because other reviews said it was reminiscent of early king, but being spooky and set in a small town doesn’t a king comparison make.

My favorite of the series. This one starts with a recap (thank the gods) and is one of my favorite level stages yet. Best audiobook narration in the game still. I tore through this in just one week!

DNF

Clunky, overly verbose, tedious, confusing (and i generally *enjoy* multiple interweaving plot lines and complex metaphysics within a book) with pedo vibes to boot. Did not care for any of the characters and DNF’d about 40% of the way through.

i took a random chance on this book based on reviews. i usually don’t listen to or read anything like this. and i have now torn through all 5 available books (so far) and am eagerly telling all my friends about them. so funny, so smart, so exciting. i love the whole series!
