Historia
Ruth Lennox, housewife and mother of three, is found dead in a pool of her own blood. Detective Chief Inspector Karlsson can’t piece together a motive and calls in Frieda, hoping her talents will offer a new angle on the case. When it emerges that the mother was hiding a scandalous secret, her family closes ranks. Frieda herself is distracted, still reeling from an attempt on her life, and struggling with her own rare feelings of vulnerability. Then a patient’s chance remark sends Frieda down a dangerous path that seems to lead to a serial killer who’s long escaped detection.

My favorite series
Revisado: 03-16-25
I love the intentional narrative quality of the Frieda Klein series. Usually I’m rushed to find out who did it, but with this series I’m happy to go along for a slower ride.

Bad Audio
Revisado: 12-08-24
The male narrator mumbles, speaks too fast, and is hard to understand. I used the playback settings to slow the speed down so I could understand him, but because he speaks more quickly than the female narrator that speed was too slow for her narration. Whoever mixed the sound should have done so with more care.

Historia
Two weeks at a stunning villa, in the South of France, was supposed to heal the rifts in this fractured family. Flaky croissants and rich, black coffee every morning before long days by the sparkling pool. Balmy candlelit dinners, once the kids have gone to bed. But Nora is shaking, as she gathers her family around the large, oak table on the terrace, at the front of the villa. Her two daughters eye her suspiciously as she tops up her wine and clears her throat to speak. But when she opens her mouth, the secret Nora came here to tell won’t come out....

Obnoxious Characters
Revisado: 06-11-23
Be advised, this is not a thriller or a suspense novel. That being said, what a miserable group of unredeemable people. The mother is the absolute worst.

The Author Really Wants to Talk About the Pandemic
Revisado: 06-04-23
I tried, but I’m not interested in slogging through a recap of each stage of the pandemic such as mask mandates, enforced social distancing, supply chain issues, etc., especially at the cost of developing the characters. The jumps back and forth between the two narratives also stop any momentum from gathering.

Dull Story Made Worse by Dull Narration
Revisado: 12-23-22
The narrator reads with the same repetitive tone and inflection throughout the story. All the sentences sound the same.
This doesn’t help a dull story with no points of interest to hook the reader.

The recent Nicci French books haven’t lived up to the standard set by their earlier works. This story didn’t have the painful pace and unengaging main character the House of Correction suffered under, but slogging through this story will take patience.
