Historia
World War II has just ended, and Britain has established the Control Commission for Germany, which oversees their zone of occupation. The Control Commission hires British civilians to work in Germany, rebuild the shattered nation, and prosecute war crimes. Somewhat aimless, bored with her job as a provincial schoolteacher, and unwilling to live with her overbearing mother any longer, 30-something Edith Graham applies for a job with the Commission - but she is also recruited by her cousin Leo, who is in the Secret Service.

Complex and engaging story
Revisado: 03-12-24
The narrator for this book was excellent. She made the characters completely come to life. The story was thrilling and disheartening. Whether the character was morally ambiguous, courageous, or reprehensible, they wove together a story that is rather unforgettable.

What a lovely walk through Beatrix Potter’s gardening life. The vivid descriptions of gardens in the story make you want to sit down with a cup of tea and savor the experience. I will listen again, I’m sure. Narrator was lovely too.

Twenty-five years after the end of the war, Noah Ainsworth is still preoccupied with those perilous, exhilarating years as a British SOE operative in France. A head injury sustained on his final operation has caused frustrating gaps in his memory—in particular about the agent who saved his life during that mission gone wrong, whose real name he never knew, nor whether she even survived the war.

I am always fascinated and often disturbed when fiction books are based on historical events. This story grabbed me by the collar and wouldn’t let go. Such a well told story and the narrators were excellent. I highly recommend.

Now that I have finished this audiobook, I sit here a bit bewildered. What a powerful, deeply meaningful book. I love books that shake me like this and leave me wondering what is next when I finished. I can’t speak highly enough of the story and I grew to love the narrator as well.

The Secret History of Home Economics

Historia
The term "home economics" may conjure traumatic memories of lopsided hand-sewn pillows or sunken muffins. But common conception obscures the story of the revolutionary science of better living. The field exploded opportunities for women in the 20th century by reducing domestic work and providing jobs as professors, engineers, chemists, and businesspeople. And it has something to teach us today. Danielle Dreilinger traces the field's history from Black colleges to Eleanor Roosevelt to Okinawa, from a Betty Crocker brigade to DIY techies.

Excellent book
Revisado: 02-25-23
What a well researched book. The history of Home Economics is complex and sometimes reflected history as it was but at other time was incredibly forward thinking and even radical. I appreciate that this history wasn’t white washed. The author explored the racism and even eugenics within the movement and certainly the challenges of functioning within a deeply patriarchal society. It was fascinating to read about the powerful personalities that shaped the profession but also how the profession suffered when the leadership retired or died. Every aspect of this book was fascinating. Also, the narrator was excellent.
