Historia
When Detective Casey White discovers the body of a beautiful teenage girl in a white nightgown near the shoreline in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, a familiar fear floods through her. Could this be Hannah, her sweet, blue-eyed daughter snatched from home 14 years ago? But it only takes one look to confirm that the girl with dark bruising around her throat is another family’s tragedy. Putting her own grief aside, Casey digs into unsolved missing child cases in the area. The victim is Cheryl Parry, one of two little girls taken during a family beach vacation nine years ago.

Historia
The daughter of a US Senator is monitoring her social media presence when she finds a picture of herself on a strange blog. And there are other pictures...of the children of other influential Washington politicians, walking or standing outside their schools, each identified by name. Surrounding the photos are texts of vicious political rants from a motley variety of radical groups. It's obviously alarming - is there an unstable extremist tracking the loved ones of powerful politicians with deadly intent? But when the FBI is called in, there isn't much the feds can do.

Historia
Robert Leckie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In Helmet for My Pillow, we follow his odyssey, from basic training on Parris Island, South Carolina, all the way to the raging battles in the Pacific, where some of the war's fiercest fighting took place. Recounting his service with the 1st Marine Division and the brutal action on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu, Leckie spares no detail of the horrors and sacrifices of war.

Don't buy this version
Revisado: 07-14-15
What did you love best about Helmet for My Pillow?
I couldn't finish listening to this version. The narrator (Nelson) is the worst. Every sentence he reads ends the same. His style is monotonous and tedious. Get the version narrated by James Badge Dale, the actor who portrayed Leckie in the Pacific Series by HBO.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
In every way possible. Nelson is impossible to listen to.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I got about one-fourth of the way through it and gave up because of the narrator.
Any additional comments?
I wish I'd bought the version narrated by James Dale in the first place.

Historia
The book focuses on four naval commanders, two American, two Japanese, whose lives collided at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944 - a clash involving more ships (almost 300), more men (nearly 200,000) and covering a larger area (more than 100 thousand square miles, roughly the size of the British Isles) than any naval battle in recorded history.

Good insight into the admirals
Revisado: 03-29-15
The narrator's style was good but some of his pronunciations of military jargon were a little off. It revealed a little lack of understanding of military history. A little annoying was his endless and repeated translations of military time to civilian time. After about the fiftieth time I would think he'd get it that the listener would know how to make the conversion.
Other than that, he did pretty well. I particularly liked the fact that he didn't try to sound too Japanese when the IJN admirals were speaking. Most narrators overdo that affectation.
The book offered some insight beyond that given in some previous works on the battle of Leyte gulf, which was its main schwerpunkt.

Historia
Between December 16, 1944 and January 15, 1945, American forces found themselves entrenched in the heavily forested Ardennes region of Belgium, France, and Luxembourg defending against an advancing German army amid freezing temperatures, deep snow, and dense fog. Operation Herbstnebel - Autumn Mist - was a massive German counter-offensive that stunned the Allies in its scope and intensity.

Tedious
Revisado: 01-13-15
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This is a book for the US Army War College. The casual reader or military history buff might find it too dry and tedious. Tons and tons of information that, if one were to use it in a discussion with other war afficionados, he'd come off as a Cliff Claven.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I'm still slogging through it. After 12 hours of listening, I'm still looking for that little nugget of insight that gives meaning to to the Battle of the Ardennes. The author gives so much background information on the German generals, I keep wondering when the real battle will start. But I'll keep slogging through it. Historically, there's a lot of data; entertainment wise it's a dull read.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Paul Boehmer?
George Guidall would have been better. He's the master of foreign accents. Or maybe Scott Brick. Boehmer's stilted high school German pronunciation of names and places is annoying and overdone. He'd have been better off using anglicanized pronunciation of names and places. He's also inconsistent, using overly guttural pronunciation for the first part of a German word, finishing with an anglicanized second half. Most annoying is his frequent pronunciation of Brrrrrrandenburg and Rrrrunstedt, which he pronounces as if it were spelled Runstaedt. 31 hours of this wears the listener down. Sometimes his pronunciation is so garbled it's difficult to understand what he's saying unless the listener speaks German, which I do. Some German words that have come into common anglicanized usage such as Ultra would have been better off left alone instead of being pronounced Ooooltrrrah. Enough said about that.
Could you see Snow & Steel being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
A movie? No. A series, maybe.
Any additional comments?
If an abridged version of Snow and Steel becomes available and it's well-edited, listen to that.

Entertaining, enlightening, and captivating
Revisado: 11-12-14
What made the experience of listening to The Panther the most enjoyable?
Without a doubt, Scott Brick does a masterful job narrating this novel. He captures the dry gallows humor deMille weaves into this tale, probably better than any narrator I've listened to, George Guidall included. I found my self laughing out loud at John Corey's quips and the responses of some of the more serious characters.
What did you like best about this story?
It helped me decide never to visit Yemen.
What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Everything! I don't think I would have gotten nearly as much out of the book if I had merely read it. Scott is a genius at conveying John Corey's sarcasm.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Too many to recount, but the many dialogs between John and Kate are priceless.
Any additional comments?
The audio version is the only way to experience this novel to its fullest.

Here is the story of two families, branches of the Solomons, transported to an alien land. Both branches eventually grow rich and powerful. But through three generations, the families never, for one moment, relinquish their hatred for each other. This novel is also the story of Australia, from its beginnings to its coming of age as a nation.
