Historia
Emerging as a market town from a cluster of hill villages in the eighth and seventh centuries B.C., Rome grew to become the ancient world's preeminent power. Everitt fashions the story of Rome's rise to glory into an erudite book filled with lasting lessons for our time. He chronicles the clash between patricians and plebeians that defined the politics of the Republic. He shows how Rome's shrewd strategy of offering citizenship to her defeated subjects was instrumental in expanding the reach of her burgeoning empire.

Writer has a biting style that capitalizes on some of the more shocking aspects of Roman history. Also, an air of culture.

Slog
Revisado: 03-11-22
I love Dan Simmons writing. He catches certain qualities and is able to conjure an almost Clive Barker type scene or feeling. Very visceral, creative and cathartic. In this book those moments of horror bliss are far and few between and one must literally scale the mountain of needless detail and summer scenes to get any kind of pay off. It all almost hits the mark but the whole is not greater than the sum of it's parts in this case. It's actually worse. I got through it though. At least I can say that.
Also, the narrator is good but his children voices become intolerable by the 2/3 mark.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Good
Revisado: 11-05-21
The writing is good. little bit of everything from political intrigue, to historical fiction. this felt more medieval political intrigue than it did fantasy. Only thing that makes it fantasy are the fantastical parts but he does not lean heavily into the fantasy. He merely sprinkles it about. I'm going to read some shorter horror or thriller before I start Clash of Kings but I think this book is good to warrant reading the next one.

Historia
Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for fame. The one thing he doesn’t have is talent - but he’s not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don’t need to be his own. Working as a waiter in a West Berlin hotel in 1988, Maurice engineers the perfect opportunity: a chance encounter with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann. He quickly ingratiates himself with the powerful - but desperately lonely - older man, teasing out of Erich a terrible, long-held secret about his activities during the war.

Dark and Devious
Revisado: 11-04-21
I devoured the first two parts. When he's young in Germany and his time with Gore Vidal is such good writing. Rest of the book was good but tedious to get through. Though he is at his most "innocent" in the beginning it is the best part of the book.

Just...Terrible
Revisado: 09-20-21
This book sucked. I can't believe some of the glowing reviews on here. Characters are incredibly shallow. No plot. No suspense. Literally the equivalent of eating cardboard. Everything it aspires to be it completely falls short of. It's a sci-fi western - lite. Nothing has any depth to it at all.

somewhat thrilling story that didn't live up to the hype. Selfish people die on the mountain. Writer is overrated. Couldn't make the material pop with the excitement and fear that it deserved. Was waiting for it to end already.

Historia
"I thought the nation was coming to an end", wrote Khushwant Singh, looking back on the violence of Partition that he was witness to over half a century ago. He believed then that he had seen the worst that India could do to herself. But after the violence in Gujarat in 2002, he felt that the worst, perhaps, is still to come. Analysing the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, the burning of Graham Staines and his children, the targeted killings by terrorists in Punjab and Kashmir, Singh confronts the absolute corruption of religion that has made us among the most brutal people on earth.

Secularist extremist dislikes religion
Revisado: 05-25-21
Mr. Singh discusses atrocities committed by various religious groups. Mainly the Gujarat riots enacted by Hindu fundamentalist against Muslims and other minority groups in the area. He goes on to discuss more absurdities in India that are a product of religious fundamentalism and communalism. In the last chapter he shows his true colors by completely objecting to any public expression of faith by the individual no matter the religious background. In the last two minutes he also shows support for sterilization after two children, religious environmentalism and open air mass burials. hmmm.

Interesting but kind of heart wrenching
Revisado: 05-16-21
Authors personal story was pretty interesting his light delves into history was kind of interesting and the Rouses story was interesting (kind of) and just more sad than anything. I felt his writing style was a bit amateur and he glosses over many things that could be the subject of books in and of themselves. so overall it was MEH

Dog welfare essay masquerading as a horror story. This is about a man who travels to an island in Norway to send radio transmissions periodically from for some industrialist. and he has a college degree but did not achieve the career heights he wanted. We get to hear his disillusionment with different areas of his life. Author really focuses on the dogs to the point where it becomes annoying if you're not a dog lover. I'm all for protecting dogs but including animal cruelty scenes is reaching. it never peaked. It has a certain level of dread it reaches early on and it just stays there. I'm glad I can return audiobooks with books like these.

Clive Barker has made his mark on modern fiction by exposing all that is surreal and magical in the ordinary world - and exploring the profound and overwhelming terror that results. With its volatile mix of the fantastical and the contemporary, the everyday and the otherworldly, Weaveworld is an epic work of dark fantasy and horror - a tour de force from one of today's most forceful and imaginative artists.

A stepping stone on any fantasy reader's journey.
Revisado: 09-29-19
Quite a mind expanding read. like a mature fairy tale but much more. Clive hits a lot emotions involving yearning and pain involving death but also rebirth and new life. I partially read and partially listened to the audiobook. I recommend reading the text and briskly. Clive likes to pack alot of metaphor and allegory between the present events at hand so muscling through some sections is required to not lose track of the narrative.
