Historia
Set in a not-too-distant America, I Cheerfully Refuse is the tale of a bereaved and pursued musician embarking under sail on a sentient Lake Superior in search of his departed, deeply beloved, bookselling wife. Rainy, an endearing bear of an Orphean narrator, seeks refuge in the harbors, fogs, and remote islands of the inland sea. Encountering lunatic storms and rising corpses from the warming depths, Rainy finds on land an increasingly desperate and illiterate people, a malignant billionaire ruling class, crumbled infrastructure, and a lawless society.

Dystopia rust belt odyssey
Revisado: 04-19-24
This story felt like a take on The Odyssey with all the strange characters along the way of a sea journey. It is grim and dark for sure- as some readers have noted, but this is dystopic fiction, although in this case it was more dystopian literature which made it a winner to me.

I couldn’t put it down!!!
Revisado: 03-21-24
What a fantastic book- it really makes you think about what makes us human, whose feelings are valid and what free agency is. It may be too soon to hope for this….. but I really hope there is a sequel.
I will also say that this made me think a little of the Barbie movie and how this is a much darker and explicit take on that. You’ll car h yourself humming “what was I made for” as you read.

TJR does it again…. Her books just keep getting better and better. I love her flawed protagonists and the way her former ones ghost through each new novel. The narrator is really good as well.

Historia
One afternoon at an outdoor market in India, a man’s shadow disappears - an occurrence science cannot explain. He is only the first. The phenomenon spreads like a plague, and while those afflicted gain a strange new power, it comes at a horrible price: the loss of all their memories. Ory and his wife, Max, have escaped the Forgetting so far by hiding in an abandoned hotel deep in the woods. Their new life feels almost normal, until one day, Max’s shadow disappears, too.

I wanted to love this book....
Revisado: 10-29-20
I really loved this book to start and it ended ok- but it took such a weird fantasy/spiritual tone that I almost turned it off 2 hours before the end. That whole tangent could have been left out and it would have been a solid work of speculative fiction.

What a delicious book. Enchanting, entertaining, well written and performed. I put this up with The Golum and the Jini as wonderful New York based stories with deep histories in the fantastic.

Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. More people should read this book
Revisado: 02-08-20
I understand why this book is controversial but I think bringing light and humanity to the hardships of these migrants can only help the cause. The story is grim and decently written. No- it’s no Steinbeck, but it is very relevant to our times and it’s a compelling novel none the less.

Loved this quirky story- reminds me of Ann Patchett and Barbara Kingsolver in the way it speaks from this woman’s perspective. The fantastic nature of these kids is handled in all the right ways to not become absurd.

Historia
James Conaway's remarkable bestseller delves into the heart of California's lush and verdant Napa Valley, also known as America's Eden. Long the source of succulent grapes and singular wines, this region is also the setting for the remarkable true saga of the personalities behind the winemaking empires. This is the story of Gallos and Mondavis, of fortunes made and lost, of dynasties and destinies.

Cringe-worthy narration
Revisado: 11-17-19
If you’re going to read a story about an iconic place, for the love of god, learn how to pronounce the names of the towns, the family names and the specific terms related to wine. As someone in the wine business who lives in CA, I find the mispronunciations so egregious, it kind of ruins the book. I’m only an hour in and I’m not sure I can finish listening.

Just short of great
Revisado: 06-04-18
I loved the story overall. Well developed and full of fantastic character development. The only thing I couldn’t stomach was how heavily Christian and preachy it was. It was totally unnecessary to the story and became so invasive I had to fast forward a few times. Leave the preaching for a spiritual book and skip it in a spy novel!
