Cute story but glamorizes slavery
Revisado: 04-11-23
I downloaded this to see if my son might be interested but I probably won't play it for him. The narrator was good (agree with one commenter that the cadence was a bit odd and off-kilter, but I got used to it and overall the storytelling was engaging) but the story itself was very much from the perspective of a rich, privileged kid who, though he had sympathy for slaves, never bothered to think about how the slaves felt about their position. The narrative glamorizes slavery and makes it seem like the slaves in this story who "have it good" because their master is nice to them aren't still considered property and not human beings. If I do listen to this with my son, we'll definitely talk about that aspect of the story.

Fantastic world building + great narration
Revisado: 05-28-21
I've read the book before so I knew the story, but I really enjoyed the narration. George Newbern can do accents really well, slipped up a couple of times but really with a book of this length and complexity, and plenty of switching accents (for example, an Australian conversing with a Columbian) his skill is impressive.
One thing others have noted, which could be jarring, is that there's no distinct indication when he's switching character POVs, but this is the same in the book -- if I recall correctly, there is maybe an extra space between paragraphs but no line of separation or little design or anything. So that's fairly true to the book as well.
Overall, I really enjoyed this. Tad Williams is one of my favorite authors for world building (check out War of the Flowers, which is a one-shot, not part of a series) and this series, with all its length, really has the ability to dive into the world(s).

Historia
Rory's just a simple southern boy from St. Antoine's Parish, Louisiana, but he knows what he wants - the girl of his dreams, reclusive and mysterious artist Ran Yamane. He's loved her since junior high school, and now he has the chance to meet her. He chucks everything and travels 1,500 miles to Anime Expo in Long Beach just so he can tell her. He's determined that nothing and nobody are going to stand in his way. Turns out, Ran Yamane isn't a girl, but he gets that a lot.

Reads like teenage fanfiction
Revisado: 10-21-20
It started ok, if a little clunky, but once the two main characters met, it really started to sound like a piece of fanfiction I might have written at 16. The plot devices reminded me of a porn plot: how can we get these two in bed the fastest, while still pretending there's a plot? The narrator's Ran Yamane, as well as other characters, were weirdly halting and jerky. I did like his Rory, though. Overall, I couldn't finish it. If you're looking for some great m/m drama and romance, try Boyfriend Material or Red, White and Royal Blue. The Raven King series isn't strictly m/m but it's got a lovely gay romance storyline in it and the writing is superb.
