Historia
Mackenzie Allen Phillips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in this midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack one wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever.

Takes You Deep
Revisado: 02-11-25
I've now read and listened to this book multiple times. Without fail it takes me on a deep journey not only into my own relationship with Father but also into my theological beliefs and into my humanity. While I don't agree with all of the theology presented I don't feel that what is presented is highly controversial. What fun is an echo chamber anyway?

Historia
Labeled variously a realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure and eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and a drama of heroic conflict, Moby Dick is first and foremost a great story. It has both the humor and poignancy of a simple sea ballad, as well as the depth and universality of a grand odyssey.

A Master Class in the English Language But
Revisado: 07-06-24
Melvilles mastery of weaving together a poetic and unique way of describing something is likely unparalleled. It's worth the read/listen just for that. He could probably write two pages worth of prose on someone picking up a toothbrush and it would be breathtaking.
But...
This story comes across as someone who has A.D.D. telling it. It starts off well before the thread leads to other topics, history, philosophy, morality, etc., before it meanders back to the story and does this repeatedly. Those were nice additions at times but overall they were too much. Then there's the ending. He must have had a brunch he was late for at that part because it went from masterful story telling, excluding all the off-shoots, to blah..blah..blah.. the end. Sadness.
Also...
This version skips like a scratched cd so I would choose another which is a shame because Frank Muller does A+ work in narration. Spot on really.
So...
Definitely listen/read this masterpiece but be prepared for the meandering and choose another version.

Brian's Not Frank
Revisado: 05-09-24
The scenes and characters Brian Herbert creates does not have the depth of the ones his Dad created. Yes these are short stories which arguably limits that but these don't come alive and pull you in like his Dads did. With that said the storyline is 'cleaner' and easier to follow and that may appeal more to some. I don't feel these stories add much to the universe but as a Dune fan they were nice dips back into the universe sooo not a wasted credit.

EMASI! Each Man a Separate Individual! That is the rallying cry of the Seps, the resistance force engaged in a class war against the upper tiers of a society driven entirely by opinion polls. Those who score high, the High-Opps, are given plush apartments, comfortable jobs, every possible convenience. But those who happen to be low-opped live crowded in warrens, facing harsh lives and brutal conditions.

A Nice Venture From The World of Dune
Revisado: 04-28-24
If there were sequels or prequels made to expand the world/characters of this work I wouldn't go out of my way for them but I enjoyed this nonetheless. It was nice to experience F. Herberts creative mind outside the Dune universe and he didn't disappoint. His ability to weave political nuances throughout his works has few peers. This story has nice pacing but has moments where it seems rushed which is the reason for the 4 star review. This work feels like a mixture of 1984 and Midas World but but stands strongly on its own. Short but worth the credit.

Historia
When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel", "Hansel and Gretel", and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style.

So Many WTF? Moments
Revisado: 04-24-24
Seriously, I was left questioning humanity after hearing many of these tales. For ex., I never realized how cannibalism (among other things) must have been a hot enough topic during this time in Europe to be included in several of these tales.
With that said, I enjoyed the historical information given before the tales started because it helped me appreciate why the brothers did what they did along with why the tales were created and maybe worded the way they were.
This collection also helped me understand just how much our modern versions have changed from the originals.
All-in-all, well worth the time and credit.

Superb Narration
Revisado: 04-24-24
The story was a bit hard to follow at times with the introduction of so many new characters along with new factions. It also felt a bit hurried at points. Regardless, in traditional Dune style, the philosophical and political strings throughout are thought provoking. As I go thru this series I've noticed it has become more sexual which saddens me because this was one of the things I liked about the earlier novels, Herberts ability to create a story and relationships without heavily leaning on the sexual. With that said, it likely couldn't be avoided because it is a central issue of humanity and power that he is working thru, especially in this novel. Hats off to Herbet though for creating an exotic scene without gutterizing it. Overall, it's worth the listen. Enjoy!

Equally as Impressive as the First Volume
Revisado: 02-16-24
I'm equally as impressed with this volume as the first one.
I'm not a sci-fy fan normally but these stories were not only well written they were eye opening at times also. It was easy to understand why those who are in the genre would have suggested these stories. All of the narrators did fine with their readings as well. This is an easy recommendation. Enjoy!!

Ben Stiller gives a wonderful performance. His vocalizations for each character is enough to make them distinguishable but not over done. His pacing is on point also. This work really shows the depth of his acting talents which makes this production that much more interesting. Though this story is short it is worth a credit. Enjoy!!!

Despite being immensely popular - and immensely lucrative - education is grossly overrated. In this explosive book, Bryan Caplan argues that the primary function of education is not to enhance students' skill but to certify their intelligence, work ethic, and conformity - in other words, to signal the qualities of a good employee.

A PHD Thesis With A Breath of Fresh Air
Revisado: 07-21-23
For the lay person like myself it's easy to get lost in the early intellectual slog of numbers and terms. Fortunately Caplan sprinkles diamonds throughout the early part of this work to get you thru the technicals as he lays down foundations for each arguement.
Speaking of each arguement, Caplan does a very good job of covering not only the arguements he supports but also the ones that attempt to counter him. The fresh air is he readily admits when he's filling in information gaps, why he fills those gaps in the way he does and includes common sense in his points.
Wrapping up, Caplan is speaking to each of us who know our education has deep problems regardless of our personal whys. He then attempts to cover every thought about why we believe the problems are what they are. Then he gives suggestions about how to correct these problems. Caplans personal views may be viewed as 'extreme' but it's time to have this 'extreme' discussion and this book provides each person the information to look inward so this discussion can be had. Long but worth the credit. Enjoy!!

This final play from the pen of Oscar Wilde is a stylish send-up of Victorian courtship and manners, complete with assumed names, mistaken lovers, and a lost handbag. Jack and Algernon are best friends, both wooing ladies who think their names are Ernest, "that name which inspires absolute confidence." Wilde's effervescent wit, scathing social satire, and high farce make this one of the most cherished plays in the English language.

Very Enjoyable
Revisado: 05-20-23
The dialogue between the characters is witty and fun while revealing certain truths of the society not only of the time but even of today.
The performances were spot on. Each character had a very distinct flavor that didn't distract from the overall performance.
The production was not overdone. Also, the addition of commentary at the end of this work helped give an Oscar Wilde layman a more in-depth feel for not only him but this play as well.
