Phenomenal book about a phenomenal culture
Revisado: 07-01-22
Id you’re like me, after reading this, you’ll desperately want to work at Netflix. The book’s format where Reed Hastings describes his theoretical strategy behind Netflix’s culture and Erin Meyer testing that against actual experiences of Netflix employees is a unique approach that keeps this book fresh and fact-based. Having two narrators for their two voices brings this dynamic to life.

The concepts in this book are as clear as the author’s surname. One need only understand cue, craving, response, reward and how to make them obvious, attractive, easy, and satisfying to orchestrate a new way of living.
Atomic Habits offers many memorable mechanisms. Good luck this time!

In a global survey by the Katzenbach Center, 80 percent of respondents believed that their organization must evolve to succeed. But a full quarter of them reported that a change effort at their organization had resulted in no visible results. Why? The fate of any change effort depends on whether and how leaders engage their culture: the self-sustaining patterns of behaving, feeling, thinking, and believing that determine how things are done in an organization.

The Narrative Style is refreshing
Revisado: 02-11-22
I really appreciate the interludes between Katz and Alex throughout The book that began each chapter and bring a narrative approach to reinforcing the concepts laid out in the book. Keeps it from being just another book on culture.
One of the most novel parts of this work is learning to identify and engage authentic informal leaders (AILs) as part of a culture change movement.
Katz is kind and brilliant, and that shines through in this book.

Working Backwards is a practical guidebook and a corporate narrative, filled with the authors’ in-the-room recollections of what “Being Amazonian” is like and how it has affected their personal and professional lives. They demonstrate that success on Amazon’s scale is not achieved by the genius of any single leader, but rather through commitment to and execution of a set of well-defined, rigorously executed principles and practices - shared here for the very first time.

Repetition is the key to learning!
Revisado: 12-19-21
Get inside the head of Jeff Bezos through his own words. Many reviews have said the text is repetitive. That’s what I like about it. The wisdom gets seated firmly in your memory and way of thinking as you listen.
Take the journey of Amazon through the annual letters to stakeholders and his other big speeches.
It’s still day one for this book!

For 25 years, Debby Irving sensed inexplicable racial tensions in her personal and professional relationships. As a colleague and neighbor, she worried about offending people she dearly wanted to befriend. As an arts administrator, she didn't understand why her diversity efforts lacked traction. As a teacher, she found her best efforts to reach out to students and families of color left her wondering what she was missing.

In this raw, honest text, she uncovers her own racism and paves a path for all of us to do the same. This is a seminal book in this field, and I’m going deeper after having read this. Thank you!

Scarcely have I read a more open, honest, vulnerable account of one’s walk through the world. Haunting, funny, real.
If you’re looking for a formula about how to ask, I didn’t find it here, but that was clearly not the point. Rather, this is expose of what happens as one learns what it means to truly ask and care and love.
Thank you for writing this, Amanda.

Phenomenal
Revisado: 10-26-17
This is a spiritual book in dogs clothing! The author gracefully embodies everything about which he writes – what it’s like to be a dog, to be a parent, to drive a race car in the rain, to be a husband, to deal with enemies and injustice, to weather and embrace suffering, to face death, to make mistakes, and on and on.
I’m a bit of an audiobook junkie, and there’s simply no better narration than in this book. I can’t imagine a better experience of consuming the mystical wisdom of The Art of Racing in the Rain.
Oh, yeah...it’s also pretty hilarious. I can’t believe a dog wrote this book!

"True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are." Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

An invitation and mandate to be yourself
Revisado: 09-17-17
This book is really important. I love her definition of the Wilderness as going out on your own when your values are rubbed the wrong way by the grain of the group. Bucking the comfort of fake belonging for the integrity and vulnerability of what Brené refers to as true belonging.
This book and its ideas are simple, elegant, and accessible.
Being accepted is being healed. Here, Brené teaches us to heal our selves by accepting ourselves.
She does it in her own words...written and spoken. What a gift for the listener. Thanks for the hard work, Brené!
The hard work now begins for me of going out into the world and stopping looking for signs of disapproval.
