Historia
In 1924, four-year-old Cecily Larson’s mother reluctantly drops her off at an orphanage in Chicago, promising to be back once she’s made enough money to support both Cecily and herself. But she never returns, and shortly after high-spirited Cecily turns seven, she is sold to a traveling circus to perform as the “little sister” to glamorous bareback rider Isabelle DuMonde. With Isabelle and the rest of the circus, Cecily finally feels she’s found the family she craves.

Nice book
Revisado: 04-13-25
First, the narrator was exceptional. It was a nice book and I enjoyed listening to it. The story line was a bit weak, rather predictable. It seemed a little light over all, even when dealing with heart wrenching themes. It made me smile, I would have like to cry a bit as well.

Not quite Jurassic Park, but great book!
Revisado: 03-17-25
I saw this title on a list of books to read if you like Michael Crichton. I’m glad I chose it! Good book, exciting story line. If you liked Jurassic Park, you’ll like this. Enjoyed the female hero of the story.

Great beginning
Revisado: 01-01-25
Starts off great. I really enjoyed the opposing chapters. Two different stories. But, once they came together things kind of fell apart a bit. The suspense was gone. The explanations weak. I lost contact with the characters. I did listen to the end which brought a small sigh of appreciation and a big smile of relief… that it was over.

In rural, impoverished Burgoyne County, New York, a pattern of strange deaths begins to emerge: Adolescent boys and girls are found murdered, their corpses left hanging in gruesome, ritualistic fashion. Historia
Award-winning novelist Taylor Brown brings to life one of the most compelling events in twentieth-century American history, reminding us of the hard-won origins of today’s unions. Rednecks is a propulsive, character-driven tale that’s both a century old and blisteringly contemporary: a story of unexpected friendship, heroism in the face of injustice, and the power of love and community against all odds.

My grandpa was a coal miner. I grew up hearing stories of coal mines and company towns. I needed to know more about this story. It was well done and beautifully narrated. I will be looking for more of this author’s books.

Historia
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Not great, but I liked it!
Revisado: 10-31-24
I could pick apart the story and the narrator. But, at the end of the day, I liked it. Some times I like steak and champagne. Some time I like a burger and a beer. The story kept me engaged. The mystery kept me guessing. The ending plausible enough to make me smile.

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. Wow! Who knew?
Revisado: 10-22-24
Ken Follett has been a favorite of mine forever. I’ve read or listened to many of his books. I was intrigued by this one. Present day? Alternate future? I was blown away. Stands up to “Sum of all Fears” or “Clear and Present Danger”. As always he so clearly describes the time and place, you feel as if you are right there. The Characters so real, so human. Highly recommend.

Historia
After the violence of Kristallnacht (1938), European Jews, now desperate to emigrate, found the consular doors of the world closed to them. Only one port required no entry visa: Shanghai, a self-governing Western trading enclave in what was technically Chinese territory, a political anomaly that became an escape hatch—if you were lucky enough to afford a ticket on one of the great Lloyd liners sailing to the East and safety.

Good Story. A new perspective on a time just before WW II. Good Narration. Rather slow moving, not a thriller. Good. Solid. Worth the listen.
