Historia
Best-selling science fiction superstars Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle combine their talents with those of Steven Barnes in an extraordinary adventure of humankind’s first outpost in the farthest reaches of space. Light years from Earth, colonists land on a planet they name Avalon. It seems like a paradise—until native creatures savagely attack. It will take every bit of intelligence, courage, and military-style discipline to survive.

The best tradition of Heinlein and classic Niven
Revisado: 02-17-22
Characters as magnificent as any of Heinlein. Story, typical brilliant Niven. Read by one of best readers to ever utter a word from the written page. I went to bed and awoke to this book. Rewinding to capture that which lulled me to sleep, struggling to stop as I set to daily responsibilities of work and everyday life. Always listening when driving. Characters reminiscent of Lazarus Long, Hazel Stone and Col Colin Campbell. Loved every minute.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Brilliant performance by Ray Porter
Revisado: 02-03-22
Ray Porter made this reading. The story is classic Weir, captivating and impossible to pause. But in the end, a bit disappointing. at the very end. Like a symphony building and building to the crescendo climax... ended with a badumpedy bump. The eleventh hour and fifty ninety second and thump.
Still, couldn't turn away. A great "buddy adventure" well structured to the very almost end. Still i've listened to parts more than once. Hero characters overcoming extreme odds. Novel plot concept. Loved the female character Strat.

Historia
With the Soviet Union's launch of the first Sputnik satellite in 1957, the Cold War soared to new heights as Americans feared losing the race into space. The X-15 Rocket Plane tells the enthralling yet little-known story of the hypersonic X-15, the winged rocket ship that met this challenge and opened the way into human-controlled spaceflight. Drawing on interviews with those who were there, Michelle Evans captures the drama and excitement of, yes, rocket science.

Unique, important history of US Space Program
Revisado: 01-27-22
Michelle's 30 years of research and interviews is an important read for all persons interested in the development of US aerospace. Insightful and compassionate and frank interviews make this an important document of history.
Not your typical enginnerd read. This is about the men and their families that flew into space and faster powered flight than any wings aloft.
The X-15 pilots would have been the first American men into space. But politics prevailed and Al Sherperd achieved that distinction.
my only complaint is the narrator's timing and mis-pronunciation of many terms, phrases and words. Fortunately the subject matter was strong enough to reveal over his shortfalls.

Historia
Without warning, Russia starts an operation to seize control of a vital arctic waterway off the Alaska coast. For hot-wired naval aviator Karen 'Bunny' O'Hare, it's about to be a bad day at the office. Not everyone takes impending nuclear Armageddon as calmly as O'Hare. From an airfield in Russia, Major-General Bondarev is leading a war he doesn't understand against machines instead of men. Under the US embassy in Moscow, Ambassador Devlin McCarthy discovers she can follow her conscience or the orders of her Secretary of State, but not both.

I couldn't put this one down. Great characters balanced with great tech, juxtaposed in a captivating plot. In the Navy I flew missions during the Cold War in that area of the world. I couldn't put it down :) Bravo Zulu!

Classic Follett, great character development, but
Revisado: 12-09-21
I love Follett's ability create characters, intrigue and suspense. Given the ending and subject of the story... a little mix fo Clancy and FX Holden military tech detail, would have fleshed this story out.
All the same, good listen. Felt compelled to keep on listening.

Fred Kaplan, hailed by The New York Times as “a rare combination of defense intellectual and pugnacious reporter,” takes us into the White House Situation Room, the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s “Tank” in the Pentagon, and the vast chambers of Strategic Command to bring us the untold stories - based on exclusive interviews and previously classified documents - of how America’s presidents and generals have thought about, threatened, broached, and just barely avoided nuclear war from the dawn of the atomic age until today.

David K. Stumpf demystifies the intercontinental ballistic missile program that was conceived at the end of the Eisenhower administration as a key component of the US nuclear strategy of massive retaliation. Although its nuclear warhead may have lacked power relative to that of the Titan II, the Minuteman more than made up for this in terms of numbers and readiness to launch - making it the ultimate ICBM.

Historically significant work
Revisado: 11-21-21
I've studied Command and Control (C2) of nuclear forces for 40+ years. Served a role in the execution of emergency war orders (EWO) during the '80's. This book provides insight at an extraordinarily details level. I've listened in total three times. Parts many more while having the hardcopy accompanying.
Only annoyance is the constant recitation of acronyms as letters vs stating the proper or common name, e.g. S-A-C vs SAC(k) or Strategic Air Command, LF vs Launch Facility, LCC vs Launch Control Center.

Disturbing, thought provoking
Revisado: 09-22-21
This is not Clancy, It is not utterly plausible, nor implausible. It is understated with regard to the hubris of the west underestimating the capabilities and motivations of ones allies and enemies. This is a story of men and women faced with unthinkable circumstances. I've studies the core subject matter for 40 years. I dare not compare my experience with that of a former Supreme Allied Commander NATO. His message is between the lines. There's a lot to be considered when contemplating the geopolitical future of in the Indian Ocean, So China Sea and the vital national interests of those nations bordering those waters. There is much to be thoughtful about with regard to our reliance and dependency on interconnected technologies.
While dubious the plot could develop in reality. Take away the subtext and warnings.
in the end, a riveting listen.
