Historia
Sami Kierce, a young college grad backpacking in Spain with friends, wakes up one morning, covered in blood. There’s a knife in his hand. Beside him, the body of his girlfriend. Anna. Dead. He doesn’t know what happened. His screams drown out his thoughts—and then he runs. Twenty-two years later, Kierce, now a private investigator, is a new father who’s working off his debts by doing low level surveillance jobs and teaching wannabe sleuths at a night school in New York City. One evening, he recognizes a familiar face at the back of the classroom. Anna.

Glimmers of another great Coben series
Revisado: 03-28-25
Harlan Coben’s books consistently rise above the mystery genre with their gripping storytelling, razor-sharp suspense, and emotionally resonant characters. Nobody’s Fool is no exception. At its heart is Sami Kierce, a former police detective turned night school instructor, whose flaws, vulnerability, and quiet resilience make him one of Coben’s most relatable protagonists.
Like many of Coben's characters, Kierce feels real—wounded yet determined, and endlessly human.
What sets Nobody’s Fool apart is not just the mystery, but the evolving dynamic between Kierce and his unconventional group of criminology students—his self-dubbed “wannabe sleuths.” From the spirited “Pink Ladies” to a range of misfit personalities, these amateur detectives bring humor, heart, and unexpected insight to the investigation. Their growing bonds and individual arcs become just as compelling as the central whodunit.
Coben masterfully balances tension with warmth, making this story a thrilling ride and a thoughtful exploration of trust, second chances, and the power of unlikely connections. I genuinely hope we see more of Kierce and his night school crew in future books—there’s a rich world here that’s just beginning to unfold.
Thoroughly enjoyable, clever, and thought-provoking.

Historia
A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the murder of her former roommate, Thalia Keith, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are hotly debated online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.

This books makes you think
Revisado: 09-13-23
This book delights the senses and the mind with cleverly crafted prose and mind expanding themes. The plot is not as important as the characterizations. The book makes you think about the nuances of multiple social issues while expanding your understanding.

So much to like
Revisado: 05-05-23
Clever story line, skilled narration, delightful cast of supporting characters. I would like to see more cat involvement and less of the main character Maddie. It’s hard to give five stars when disliking the main character so much for her sanctimonious and rude behavior towards others.

After fleeing London in infamy more than two years prior, Lady Kiera Darby's return to the city is anything but mundane, though not for the reasons she expected. A gang of body snatchers is arrested on suspicion of imitating the notorious misdeeds of Edinburgh criminals Burke and Hare - killing people from the streets and selling their bodies to medical schools. Then Kiera's past - a past she thought she'd finally made peace with - rises up to haunt her.

Best yet
Revisado: 09-15-22
Each entry in this series is better than the last. I’m particularly drawn to painlessly learning a bit more history in a fictional setting. The narrator’s tone is perfectly suited in for these historical mysteries. Looking forward to the next.

Twice is not enough
Revisado: 05-05-21
Rarely has a book so completely transported me to another time and place. I have now both read and listened to the book; and will soon revisit for a third time. History comes alive as you see life through the words of the Temple Dancer. This book will help bring understanding to the limited choices women had in the not too distant past. You will understand why becoming a devadasi was an act of divine devotion and often a wise choice for women. Don't miss the author's notes at the end as it brings home the continuing plight of many poor women today. This book will expand your mind!

Like a gentle wind on a field of lavender
Revisado: 04-22-21
Oh how I hope there will be a sequel to this book so we can follow the next few years of life with its likeable and not so likeable characters.
The book may seem slow paced to some as it shares the real life struggles near the end of the “Great War.” The beauty is in those subtle details that allow the reader a glimpse at what life was like for the survivors.
I especially enjoyed reading about the Women’s Land Army.
This is different from the Royal Spyness series; but so delicious if you enjoy learning history via historical fiction books.
