Historia
John Blake grew up in a Black neighborhood in inner-city Baltimore that became the setting for the HBO series The Wire. There he became a self-described “closeted biracial person,” hostile toward white people while hiding the truth of his mother’s race. The son of a Black man and a white woman who met when interracial marriage was still illegal, Blake knew this much about his mother: She vanished from his life not long after his birth, and her family rejected him because of his race. But at the age of seventeen, Blake had a surprise encounter that uncovered a disturbing family secret.

Compelling, Honest and Brutal Truth
Revisado: 11-15-23
I could hardly stop listening....spent 1/2 of one night with my earbuds in as my head was on the pillow. His life story is compelling, reflective and, despite John and his brother's brutal childhood experiences, a resolution of not only, survival, but of love, acceptance and redemption.
I am a 75 year old, white woman who well recalls watching the turbulence of the 1960's on TV in our home in Michigan and announcing to my parents at age 15, that IF I was 18, I would join the March for Freedom in the South. They were visibly shocked and exchanged looks and spoke words of concern for my safety...and "not to become involved with that struggle". Sixty years later, I still maintain my position...that we all must unite in the struggle.
Thank you...John Blake...for revealing your truth and life experiences. I only can wish that all Americans could listen to your story and your conclusions at the end--maybe more minds and hearts could be changed as mine was when I was 15 and watched that struggle for human rights on TV in the safety of my living room.

Historia
Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

Sad—-
Revisado: 09-19-23
Why mess with Jane’s perfection of words and nuances? The voices were good——but this loses the magic of Jane Austen.
Give it a different title but don’t name it Emma when it’s a messed up adaptation. Jane would be rolling over in her grave.
PS —if writers decide to “dramatize “ Hamlet—then don’t mess with Shakespeare’s wording —call it “Hamlet—abridged version for the masses of people who don’t read”. Sorry that I listened to the whole thing—disappointing!

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

I suspect that we all have some aspect of childhood that we would like to heal. Who can claim a perfect childhood? Maybe some can but I don’t know them.
This is a beautiful homage to the ability to learn to accept the wounds of childhood and realize that we can all have “The Peace that Passeth All Understanding”. Thank you to the authors who have devoted their lives to understanding there are powerful ways to heal from the past.

There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

Harry Belafonte is not just one of the greatest entertainers of our time; he has led one of the great American lives of the last century. Now, this extraordinary icon tells us the story of that life, giving us its full breadth, letting us share in the struggles, the tragedies, and, most of all, the inspiring triumphs.

Amazing Life...Amazing Focus on human rights!
Revisado: 04-20-22
Inspirational and enlightening--Belafonte's passion about human rights ranks up there with the great examples of history. He didn't have to devote his life to humanism. He had his share of enjoying his fame and riches...and he is frank about his human frailties. But, he believed in human rights and used his platform to stand up for them.
The entire story is engaging and, for me, will require a second listen and possibly more. I also, jumped into YouTube videos of him; not just his performances, but his interviews about his beliefs. Bless him for his activism!

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

One of my favorites about Lincoln.
Revisado: 02-07-20
I find Lincoln fascinating and have read many books about him. Goodwin's book is absorbing and brings a deeper understanding on how Lincoln carefully (and sometimes slowly) made decisions as President and then stuck by those decision. A truly strong man who surrounded himself with strong people with varied opinions. Wonderful narration, also.

Historia
Why is Jane Austen so phenomenally popular? Why do we go back to Pride and Prejudice again and again? Why do we delight in Emma's mischievous schemes? Why do we care that Anne Elliot of Persuasion suffers? We care because the human brain is a social brain. And Austen's characters are so believable, that for many of us, they are not just imaginary beings, but friends whom we know and love. We see ourselves and others reflected in Austen's work.

Revisado: 02-07-20
Wendy Jones presents a complex and unique viewpoint of Jane Austen's work which includes in depth science about the Austen's ability to understand and convey human behavior. I've listened to this book 3 times and will easily go for a 4th time since I absorb something new with each listening.

Historia
In Little Women, Mr. March went off to war. But in real life it was Jo (Louisa May Alcott herself, an avowed abolitionist) who traveled to Washington to nurse Northern soldiers. Despite the subject matter, her account is full of amusing anecdotes as she makes her way alone from Concord to DC, trying to finagle a free ticket and convinced she will drown during the journey.

Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body - how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, "We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted."

I have a degree in English literature, and am fascinated by science but can get lost in it fairly quickly. Mr. Bryson brings the workings of MY body to a level that I can visualize and understand. He lightens it with his humor that makes it totally absorbing. Enjoy---IT'S the body YOU live in every day and it works miracles every day.
