Historia
Flower shop owner Ellie McEwan is driving home late one frosty November night when a shadowy figure leaps into the road out of nowhere. Ellie swerves to avoid him — and slams head-on into the crash barrier. Days later, Ellie wakes up in hospital — and notices there’s something different. Everyone she looks at — the doctor, the nurse, her friend Carole — is surrounded by a coloured aura. Her near-death experience seems to have given her a new ability. And now Ellie must use her new-found gift to catch a killer.

I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Revisado: 06-27-24
Thrillers, mysteries, and police procedurals are my preferred genre. Throw in some supernatural elements, and it can be even more enjoyable. Trouble is, with most of the thrillers I have read with supernatural elements, the writing is subpar. Not so in this book! The writing is fantastic (it’s Joy Ellis!), with superb character development, excellent pacing and solid ending. Narration was great, too. I’mI’m on to book 2 in this series and wish there were more.

But as their work continues, Kathy’s playtime takes a grim turn: a doll stabs another doll, a tiny figurine is chained to a plastic toy couch.

Great writing, gripping story.
Revisado: 05-08-24
This was a great story with well-developed characters that kept me enthralled. Unfortunately, I found the narrators, poor diction and mispronunciations, irritating, and distracting. She has a great voice, but was unable to pronounce many common words. “Hold” became “hode”and “cold” and “shoulder” became “code” and “show-der “. She says “coonent” and “shunnent” instead of “couldn’t” and “shouldn’t “, “impordund” instead of important.” The story was gripping enough that I stuck with the entire book, but I will make sure to not listen to anymore books she narrates.

Historia
Every town needs a hero, and Detective Cal Farrell fits the bill. He stopped an active shooter six months earlier, and now he’s become the darling of the Alexandria press. The problem is that Cal remembers nothing from that day. He’s working with a psychiatrist to recover his memories, but hasn’t had much luck. Then, on one of his morning runs, he is once again the first on scene for a grisly discovery—a body hanging impossibly high on a tree. Soon there’s another victim, killed by a blade and dumped in a ravine.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Both the writing and the narration were stellar. I hope the author writes more thrillers soon, but I’m willing to try some of his other books even though they’re of a genre I don’t usually read.

Historia
Hell comes to Southern California every October. It rides in on searing Santa Ana winds that blast at near hurricane force, igniting voracious wildfires. Master thief Danny Cole longs for the flames. A tsunami of fire is exactly what he needs to pull off a daring crime and avenge a fallen friend. As the most devastating firestorms in Los Angeles’ history scorch the hills of Malibu, relentless arson investigator Walter Sharpe and his wild card of a new partner, Andrew Walker, a former US marshal, suspect that someone set the massive blazes intentionally, a terrifying means to an unknown end.

I always enjoy Lee Goldberg novels. His dialogue and banter never seem forced, there’s plenty of action, great characters, and as soon as I’m done with one I want to buy another. This one was a hit for me.

Odd, sometimes sickening, and unputdownable!
Revisado: 02-16-24
I’m not a fan of cannibals, but Jack Heath managed to flesh out (no pun intended) his main character beautifully. I had very little ambiguity rooting for Timothy Blake, even though he is a hero I would never want to meet. The storyline was action packed and held my interest without pause. I’m getting ready to read book two now!

Excellent writing, lovely story.
Revisado: 07-29-23
This is not an action packed thriller. I say this for all the reviewers who claimed it was boring. It is a beautifully written, evocative story with well developed characters. I was never once bored. The only criticism I have is that one of the narrators mispronounces the short ‘i’ sound in every word, e.g. ‘un’ instead of ‘in’, and ‘lunger’ instead of ‘linger.’ No on wants to hear that.

Could have been interesting but wasn't
Revisado: 10-26-20
What a concept! You inherit a grand house (with crazy conditions) and a load of money to renovate, refurbish, and restore it. I love that! I couldn't wait to see how the story unfolded. Then we went back in time to the sassy teenager interviewing the old matriarch. Then we went even further back to a story that was uninteresting and sappy and poorly written about people I just didn't care about. The dialogue during the 1904 period was ridiculous and I tried hard to hold on to see what would happen once the story returned to "present day", but I just couldn't. I was on a road trip, unable to stop and look at my audible library to upload a different book but still chose to turn off Winter Cottage and drive in silence. I really do not recommend this book. Also, I didn't like the narration. The accents were actually confusing and everyone sounded very unattractive and unlikeable. Had we stayed in present day, I would have suffered through the bad narration, but a bad storyline plus bad narration is just no fun.

Fantastic and Awful
Revisado: 09-25-20
This book is skillfully and beautifully written and it is about a nightmarish event that becomes more *and* less believable as the story unfolds. Done in first-person interviews, you get a glimpse into the diverse experiences of many characters and can begin to see how humans can quickly devolve to their basest nature. I wanted it to be over but couldn't bear to fast forward or stop listening. It was like being fully immersed in the craziest ongoing news story, waiting for details that explain the horror, feeling like a voyeur to something really horrible. I want to recommend it to everyone, but I'm afraid to recommend it to anyone. The whole experience was rife with dichotomy. Read it and see for yourself!

Vapid
Revisado: 07-08-20
I'm so sorry to say that I couldn't bear to finish this book. The characters are vapid and boring. For example, early in the story one calls another (both artists in art school) quirky for having shoes in colors other than black or brown and bringing home-baked goods to gatherings. Anyone who knows an artist knows that red shoes and muffins wouldn't even register on the creativity and quirkiness scale. The descriptions are amateurish and self-indulgent. I never grew fond of any of the characters and there are too many good books out there waiting for me, so I bailed - something I rarely do. I really wanted to like it. I really did. On the other hand, the narration was well done.
