The author does an excellent job capturing the charm, excitement, and subtlety of the work. I’d love to listen to a similar work addressing Tolkien’s other works! An excellent listen.

A meticulously organized, expertly told story of triumph and tragedy, as the title suggests. Endlessly fascinating account of a complex life.

Despite occasional forays down avenues which don’t seem to warrant all of the time they were given, (Max’s love life and Gatsby’s race stand out) it was thoroughly enjoyable. The narrators are charming and it was a very pleasant listen.

This is a charming treatment of the Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s life, and the author’s own experiences. It blends together pleasantly and encourages subsequent listens to the book in question.

This book offers the listener a pleasant and potentially corrective alternative perspective to approach daily life with. It is a lovely listen to accompany nature walks in spring and fall and I would recommend it to anyone grappling with transitions in their lives.

I hoped this might provide novel insight into the LoZ but it offered little beyond surface level analysis of the games, paired with consistent stretches to make the themes of the series fit physiological frameworks. It’s concluding treatment on the concept of masculine and feminine traits was particularly disappointing, advocating for a universally androgynous future. Zelda is critiqued for relying on wisdom rather than being as active as the Link, despite being a. Royalty that would be insulated from such tasks b. The wielder of the tri-force of wisdom and not courage or power and c. Not being the main character of the franchise. Zelda has been a consistently interesting and active character, and demonstrating traditionally feminine traits at times is not an inherently negative concept that has to be overcome in pursuit of sterilizing androgyny.

Dimitra Fimi explores the nuances of Tolkien’s myth making with appreciation for the scope and impact of Tolkien’s work, without compromising the subtleties of themes and concepts. She engages with the potential challenges posed by Tolkien’s characterization of the other in good faith and acknowledges Tolkien’s capacity for change throughout his life. It’s consistently interesting and a very impressive course, even if it’s shorter than my interest in the subject and her treatment of it desire.

Grant Hardy provides a gracious and compelling exploration of Asia’s key philosophers, historians, religious thinkers, and their influences. His analysis is measured and respectful and he provides teaching in a humorous, good-mannered, and educational way. It’s a remarkable way to spend 18 hours.

If Guardiola commissioned a book to be written for the sole purpose of puffing him up I would expect that work to be more objective than this. The author willfully misleads the reader by carefully handpicking stats and quotes to ensure that Guardiola is depicted in mythical terms. He claims that Guardiola is not dogmatic, then proceeds to explain how he pouted despite winning because the style of play was hampered by an injured squad. He claims that Bayern Munich represented a monumental challenge, then proceeds to gloss over the fact that he took over the most expensive squad in the country, took his opposition’s best players, and still failed to accomplish what his predecessor had done. The only reason this isn’t a one star review is because it provides interesting access to Guardiola and the locker room, but it is of almost no analytical value as the author seems either completely oblivious, or willfully obtuse about the game. He claimed Guardiola played five strikers (which is functionally impossible and didn’t happen) and that he used a formation that had four full backs (not four players that were full backs, but four full back positions within the formation which is impossible.) it’s nonsense and not worth your time.
