Historia
Naomi Shaw used to believe in magic. Twenty-two years ago, she and her two best friends, Cassidy and Olivia, spent the summer roaming the woods, imagining a world of ceremony and wonder. They called it the Goddess Game. The summer ended suddenly when Naomi was attacked. Miraculously, she survived her seventeen stab wounds and lived to identify the man who had hurt her. The girls’ testimony put away a serial killer, wanted for murdering six women. They were heroes.

Excellent twists
Revisado: 02-13-24
Loved the weaving of several stories together with an excellent reveal in the end. The narrator did an excellent job, but needs to diversify her “male” voices.

Historia
On the first Sunday in December 1941, an armada of Japanese warplanes appeared suddenly over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Six months later, in a sea fight north of the tiny atoll of Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sent into the abyss. Pacific Crucible tells the epic tale of these first searing months of the Pacific war, when the U.S. Navy shook off the worst defeat in American military history and seized the strategic initiative.

Perspective and Context
Revisado: 03-31-20
Focusing on the early stages of the Pacific war, Mr. Toll provides exhaustive detail we sometimes forget with the passage of time. In depth perspective from the planners, and the sailors and airmen from both sides brought an unexpected sense of tension even though I know the outcome. I found myself crying with the first hand accounts of loss as if reliving the experience. The war’s result was in no way a fore gone conclusion and this book provided the context to re-examine a myriad of opportunities which could easily have turned out differently.

Historia
Professional killers with the souls of artists, would-be theater directors turned Kremlin puppet-masters, suicidal supermodels, Hell's Angels who hallucinate themselves as holy warriors, and oligarch revolutionaries: welcome to the glittering, surreal heart of 21st-century Russia. It is a world erupting with new money and new power, changing so fast it breaks all sense of reality, home to a form of dictatorship far subtler than 20th century strains, that is rapidly rising to challenge the West.

Not what was expected
Revisado: 10-21-17
Interesting vignettes and insight, but just when you think you will get insight into Putin's Russia, the story veers off to shallow reporting. I had hoped to learn more about the ex communists turned new nationalists or a better explanation of why Russia is behaving as it is. Disappointed. And the narrator didn't help. His Russian accent sounds more Nigerian!

Who were the three men the American and Soviet superpowers exchanged at Berlin’s Glienicke Bridge and Checkpoint Charlie in the first prisoner exchange of the nuclear age? Bridge of Spies vividly traces their paths to that electrifying moment on February 10, 1962, when their fates helped to define the conflicts and lethal undercurrents of the most dangerous years of the cold war.

More than a bridge
Revisado: 05-20-17
After seeing the movie, I wanted to know more about the story. The book was amazing, providing extensive context for the events and people. The complicated military, economic, political, and personal aspects have been glossed over with time, but are crucial to understand what happened, and tantalizingly, what didn't happen! Really worth the read!

Arnie Roth, a family practitioner, develops viral encephalitis. He awakens from the near-death experience with a new appreciation for life and an unexpected talent, his sensitivity to smell has increased a thousandfold. The Sixth Sense is highly entertaining, thought provoking, and a touching journey through a world that influences us every day, but one that we know too little about.

Dulled Senses
Revisado: 08-18-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Anyone who wants character development for more than half the book before getting an idea of what is going on.
What was most disappointing about Lawrence W. Gold M.D.’s story?
Too many characters to develop and try to keep track of as the story slowly develops.
Would you be willing to try another one of Craig R. Nickerson’s performances?
No. He was perhaps the worst thing about this audio book. He sounded like he his nose was stuffed up and he was recording in a tunnel. He has very limited range in his voice and this story had too many characters which were indistinguishable given his limited range.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The story was interesting and the implications of heightened sensory acuteness were explored in intriguing ways.
Any additional comments?
Perhaps a new recording with a narrator with a good range of voices might have made the story more appealing.

Historia
More than any other people on earth, Americans are free to say and write what they think. The reason for this extraordinary freedom is not a superior culture of tolerance, but just 14 words in our most fundamental legal document: the free expression clauses of the First Amendment to the Constitution.
Anthony Lewis tells us how these rights were created, revealing a story of hard choices, heroic (and some less heroic) judges, and fascinating and eccentric defendants who forced the legal system to come face-to-face with one of America's great founding ideas.

Free Speech Still A Radical Idea!
Revisado: 03-31-15
Great review of the origins of the first amendment to its current protections. Especially helpful reviews of formative case law marking new definitions for what is protected from infringement.
