Historia
It's 2040. After decades of research, scientists of the European Union believe that they have at last conquered humankind's most pernicious foe: old age. For the first time, technology holds out the promise of not merely slowing the aging process but actually reversing it. The first subject for treatment is 78-year-old philanthropist Jeff Baker. After 18 months in a rejuvenation tank, Jeff emerges looking like a 20-year-old. And the change is more than skin deep. From his hair cells down to his DNA, Jeff is 20 - with a breadth of life experience.

absolutely horrendous
Revisado: 03-17-25
this book is embarrassingly pointless. I can barely connect it to the rest of the series. barely sci Fi in any way. ridiculous plot. embarrassing characters. even more embarrassing sexual content...or the authors fantasy. either way I regret the time spent on this unnecessary "prequel"

Historia
The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

I get people's criticism about the slow start but I appreciate the thorough world/universe building

Historia
When the plague came, federal agent Ellie Colson fled into the Adirondacks with Dee, the daughter she barely knew. They began a new life as subsistence farmers, isolated from the fall of the world. In the six years since, a small community has arisen from the ashes. Dee is grown up. She's engaged to Quinn, a young man from across the lake. And she's being hunted. Strangers are spying on the farms at night. Dee's harassed by a spurned suitor. One of Quinn's dogs turns up dead. Drawing on her old skills, Ellie launches an investigation of the locals.

BORING
Revisado: 03-25-24
the prequel novella featuring Agent Wilson and Dee was really exciting and I was eager to pick their story back up.
unfortunately, the parallel story of Lucy was more interesting, but neither story had much to do with the aliens.
That might have been fine but both stories bogged down and were pretty boring.
the southern accents were absolutely brutal as well

the resolution was flawed.
in order not to spoil anything I'll just say
I simply do not believe that in any scenario that is way the FBI would resolve this scenario (or any scenario involving a child). otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable series just a notch below Don Winslow

Historia
For centuries, men and women have manned lighthouses to ensure the safe passage of ships. It is a lonely job and a thankless one for the most part. Until something goes wrong. Until a ship is in distress. In the twenty-third century, this job has moved into outer space. A network of beacons allows ships to travel across the Milky Way at many times the speed of light. These beacons are built to be robust. They never break down. They never fail. At least, they aren’t supposed to.

Terrible

the narrators weird, cocky delivery is very off putting.
the story is boring, lacks development and ultimately had me thinking 2 hours in "this book is dumb and I'm wasting time".
and this is from someone who actually kind of enjoys bad sci-fi.
really disappointing. can't even finish this

Historia
Leftöver Crack is a band of drug-abusing, dumpster-diving, cop-hating, queer-positive, pro-choice crust punks who successfully blend ska-punk, pop, hip-hop, and death metal genres. They've been banned from clubs, states, and counties and kicked off multiple record labels. They've received teen-idol adoration and death threats from their fans. They've played benefits for a multitude of causes while leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

thorough without being redundant
Revisado: 09-03-23
great story of a fascinating band by the people who lived it.
I feel like maybe a few of the roughest edges were sanded off but in general this was very entertaining, well constructed and thorough.
while Leftöver Crack isn't for everyone, to me they are massively underated and underappreciated.
this book goes a long way to explaining their career wrong turns but also their philosophy and how it contributed to their trajectory.
all in all I enjoyed it. and I've been registering to Leftöver Crack all week

what happened?
Revisado: 08-21-23
after 6 books the tone of the series changed completely. the AI Skippy and the Merry Band of Pirates all of a sudden have a nasty, adversarial relationship after being friends and confidants for 6 books with no explanation?
while the first 6 books weren't high art, they were fun.
this is redundant and a total drag. no fun at all

beyond stupid
Revisado: 11-02-22
as another reviewer said it seems like it was written by a lonely teenager. But that might be giving this book too much credit. It is truly beyond stupid and I regret any time spent on it. not a huge surprise from a rock-headed second amendment cheerleader though.

Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

kind of a mess with some enjoyable moments
Revisado: 09-30-22
Basically Redshirts is a long short story with bolt-ons. definitely not Scalzi's best work.
there are some enjoyable moments but it is a little underdeveloped and then relies on multiple add ons to fill in the blanks. would have been better if woven together cohesively. and maybe I just blanked out but the plan that resolves the main issue was hard to completely understand. I'm fine with suspension of disbelief, just make sure things are explained.
