Regurgitating the same points
Revisado: 03-01-23
As a progressive, who has many disagreements with other progressives, I had extremely high expectations that Michael would touch upon the points that bother me about progressives in general, but that never came. The more you dig in, the more frustrated you're becoming with the limited scope and single-mindedness of the author. It's kinda disappointing and intellectually dishonest bandwagoning with the right-wingers in criticism of the progressives. There are many issues that progressives do not excel in, but jumping on antifa, communism and marxism is a cheapshot and does not really suit the honest discussion. I totally agree with the gist of the book that progressives do share certain accountability in inability of solving the homelessness on the west coast but you cannot just blame them and misinterpret their intentions/actions. Threatening someone with a jail is not an effective way of dissuading them from using drugs; more police does not mean safer streets. From abundance of research, it is clear that more policing is related to higher crime rates and more funding does not drive the crime rates down. The same regurgitated points that the police will save the world nevertheless of the conflicting research data. There's a chapter in the book titled "it's not about money"-I don't know whether this proposition can be ascribed to naivety or to the ignorance of the author. In the modern capitalism there's something that's not about money?

Marriage Guide for dummies
Revisado: 03-01-23
I should have known better that the book with this pathetic title wouldn't turn out properly useful. But, I came across it one on of the youtube channels so I gave it a try. It's not only useless but it's incredibly deleterious. The title of the book should be "How to get married at all costs" and intentionally written for desperate women. It completely neglects the same sex marriages, non-monogamy, healthy relationships without marriage etc. The book is written from a very limited conservative approach and puts forward incredulous tips of how to avoid jerks, not even mentioning that jerks sometimes help us understand what we really want and what we don't; that we should take it as a life lesson and not avoid people based on rigid criteria just in case they might be jerks. Overall, the title would probably give everything away. I do not recommend wasting time on this!

Historia
A Nobel Peace Prize recipient beatified by the Catholic Church in 2003, Mother Teresa of Calcutta was celebrated by heads of state and adored by millions for her work on behalf of the poor. In his measured critique, Hitchens asks only that Mother Teresa's reputation be judged by her actions - not the other way around. With characteristic élan and rhetorical dexterity, Hitchens eviscerates the fawning cult of Teresa, recasting the Albanian missionary as a spurious, despotic, and megalomaniacal operative.

It wasn't bad but I had high expectations and was kinda underwhelmed eventually. It's more like an article than an extensive critique of Mother Teresa.

When Arkady Petrovich comes home from college, his father finds his eager, naive son changed almost beyond recognition, for the impressionable Arkady has fallen under the powerful influence of the friend he has brought with him. A self-proclaimed nihilist, the ardent young Bazarov shocks Arkady's father by criticising the landowning way of life and by his outspoken determination to sweep away the traditional values of contemporary Russian society.

Abysmal in all senses
Revisado: 01-16-23
I had such high expectations from this book and it did not deliver 10%. The story is awful, pandering to the old values and traditions, making the revolutionary ideology deleterious and cringeworthy and treating one of the main characters with sheer disdain. I absolutely despised the author's approach to his protagonists. As for the audiobook, it makes the reading process more intolerable. First of all, I like listening to the audiobook while simultaneously following the book but I could not find any versions/translations of this book that coincided with this particular audiobook. In the beginning, it does not say anything about the translator or the publisher or any other traceable details. The accent and the reading style of the narrator is horrific. I would not recommend less! Plain tragedy

In this characteristically turbocharged new book, celebrated Rolling Stone journalist Matt Taibbi provides an insider's guide to the variety of ways today's mainstream media tells us lies. In the internet age, the press have mastered the art of monetizing anger, paranoia, and distrust. Taibbi, who has spent much of his career covering elections in which this kind of manipulative activity is most egregious, provides a rich taxonomic survey of American political journalism's dirty tricks.

Bloated Meandering
Revisado: 07-29-22
So, my reactions to this (audio)book varied from 'It's not a bad book' to 'It's an OK book' to 'it's such a garbage'. If it wasn't an audiobook, I would most likely not read it. I mean I wouldn't be able to. Matt meanders so much throughout the book that it makes the reading/listening almost unbearable. It's not that I disagree with the gist of it, but obsolete and irrelevant references do not lay the foundation for the premise of the book. Bunch of irrelevant journalists' irrelevant articles concocted in a book that bores the reader/listener and falls short in addressing the core issue it purports to deal with. Also, very disappointing to see how dismissive it is of Russiagate. Okay, there was no collusion, but Matt did not even mention the fact that Kremlin abhors Hillary and DID try everything in the power to encourage the election of Trump. Also, handful of incompetent and ironic claims like "Russia is not the Soviet Union"-bring the overall quality of the book way down. As a leftist myself, I am absolutely blown away how gullible Western leftists are when it comes to Russia. Somehow, they believe that the Soviet Union was the leftist heaven and always stick their foot for Russia, even when it perpetrates atrocities. Also, don't forget that Matt was supporting and vehemently defending Tulsi Gabbard, portraying her as an anti-war candidate, when we all know that Tulsi was explicitly promoting more drone strikes on Fox. Overall, a quite disappointing book. 3/10

Empowering and inspiring cases
Revisado: 07-25-22
I absolutely love Gloria Allred and I thoroughly enjoyed reading/listening to her book. The cases that she dealt with and won are so monumental. She has always been on the forefront of social change and progress. The power of inspiration and empowerment through this book is tangible and indescribable. The only vice is that almost half of the book is actually omitted in this audiobook. I generally enjoy listening to the audiobook while following it in the hardcopy, so I noticed many parts of it not included in the audiobook.

The American electoral system is clearly falling apart - as evidenced by the 2016 presidential election. In It's Time to Fight Dirty, David Faris offers accessible, actionable strategies for American institutional reform which don't require a constitutional amendment, and would have a lasting impact on our future. With equal amounts of playful irreverence and persuasive reasoning, Faris describes how the Constitution's deep democratic flaws constantly put progressives at a disadvantage, and lays out strategies for "fighting dirty" though obstructionism and procedural warfare.

I loved the book as well as the specific ways portrayed in it for how Democrats can actually beat GOP's a** each and every time. Unfortunately, even as good as it sounds, Dems will never actually implement any of this. US would've been such a better place if Dems could actually fight back and actually cared for their own constituency.

Everyone needs to love and be loved - even men. But to know love, men must be able to look at the ways that patriarchal culture keeps them from knowing themselves, from being in touch with their feelings, from loving. In The Will to Change, bell hooks gets to the heart of the matter and shows men how to express the emotions that are a fundamental part of who they are - whatever their age, marital status, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

Middle ground corporate Dem stance
Revisado: 07-08-22
Well, MSNBC duped me into buying this book. I saw Clint’s interview and thought he was coherent (which is rare nowadays) and his book title was interesting(kudos for that), but before l started reading and listening to this book, l’ve done some research about the author (wish l would’ve done it before purchasing the book) and l knew l was on my way to the huge disappointment. Well, you shouldn’t expect a well analyzed and objectively written book from a former FBI agent. This is probably one of the worst books l’ve ever read and l’ll tell you why. Most of the information in the book is nothing new(especially if you’re politically savvy). Rambling on 400 pages without disclosing anything attention grabbing is an art by itself. It’s a very corporate Dem viewpoint that US is the flourishing country and just those bad guys(Wikileaks) corrupt the country and mislead people. Author’s viewpoints are distorted not only for right-wing, but more so for left-wing(see how passive aggressive he gets when the subject goes to Bernie or Jill Stein). He sufferers from what he himself calls “status-quo bias”. Overall, l do not recommend it!

This is an easily digestible argument about what rights we have, what rights Republicans are trying to take away, and how to stop them. Mystal explains how to protect the rights of women and people of color instead of cowering to the absolutism of gun owners and bigots. He explains the legal way to stop everything from police brutality to political gerrymandering, just by changing a few judges and justices. He strips out all of the fancy jargon conservatives like to hide behind and lays bare the truth of their project to keep America forever tethered to its slaveholding past.
