Unidimensional characters, unimpressive plot, inaccurate use of early early modern English. Overall, this story is just not that good.

Historia
At the end of the fifteenth century, Burgundy was extinguished as an independent state. It had been a fabulously wealthy, turbulent region situated between France and Germany, with close links to the English kingdom. Torn apart by the dynastic struggles of early modern Europe, this extraordinary realm vanished from the map. But it became the cradle of what we now know as the Low Countries, modern Belgium and the Netherlands. This is the story of a thousand years, a must-listen narrative history of ambitious aristocrats, family dysfunction, treachery, savage battles, luxury, and madness.

I've never read anything quite like this. The author is not only a great historian but a great writer. very enjoyable, even for someone who had scant knowledge of burgundian history.

Historia
The Sleepwalkers is historian Christopher Clark's riveting account of the explosive beginnings of World War I. Drawing on new scholarship, Clark offers a fresh look at World War I, focusing not on the battles and atrocities of the war itself but on the complex events and relationships that led a group of well-meaning leaders into brutal conflict.

Masterful work of scholarship
Revisado: 09-22-23
Superb. Indescribable depth. No stone left unturned. A must-read for anyone interested in understanding the origins of the conflict.
There was so much information here that was new for me and so much that I had not even suspected I needed to know.
He spends a lot of time explaining the different notes of power at work in each of the major belligerents, the shifts occurring in the alliance system, and the paradoxical urgency of action in a low trust system what enemies have to be feared and allies of convenience could not be trusted to remain so eternally.
I came away with the realization that all of the popular history I have consumed over the past 15 years have been dead wrong in many respects. From this point forward, I will only be reading works from professional historians.

Historia
The window between two equally stifling autocracies - the imperial family and the communists - was open only briefly, in the last couple of years of the 19th century until the end of WWI, by which time the revolution was in full fury. From the last years of Tolstoy until the death of the Tsar and his family, however, Russia experimented with liberalism and cultural openness. Novelists and playwrights blossomed and political ideas were swapped in coffee houses.

I must admit that I was skeptical when I saw that the author was a journalist and not an academic historian. I am so very delighted to have given it a try. I have really encountered such vivid portraits of the protagonists of this tragic story. Highly recommend it. one of my favorite books ever on the Russian Revolution.

Historia
The extreme fringe in the South took charge, first in South Carolina and Mississippi, but then throughout the lower South, sounding the drum roll for secession. This is the first book to fully document how this decided minority of Southern hotspurs took hold of the secessionist issue and drove the South out of the Union. William Freehling provides compelling profiles of the leaders of this movement. Throughout the narrative, he evokes a world of fascinating characters and places as he captures the drama of one of America's most important - and least understood - stories.

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.

Revisado: 09-13-22
This is my favorite book I have read in a long while, although it was quite sad to get through it.
The version of US history that comes down to us is so sanitized that you have to take time as an adult to revisit these episodes in depth so you can get a more complex appreciation of the history of our nation.
Not only is the author's prose captivating, but the book is narrated by Grover Gardner, one of the best narrators in the business. You simply have to add this book to your list.
