Historia
For six years Jim and Jamie Dutcher lived intimately with a pack of wolves, gaining their trust as no one has before. In this book the Dutchers reflect on the virtues they observed in wolf society and behavior. Each chapter exemplifies a principle, such as kindness, teamwork, playfulness, respect, curiosity, and compassion. Their heartfelt stories combine into a thought-provoking meditation on the values shared between the human and the animal world.

For wolf lovers (and skeptics)
Revisado: 08-03-22
This book was a beautiful and enlightening look at the lives of wolves. I loved the dual narration and hearing the story of the Sawtooth pack from both authors' perspectives.
I love wolves and struggle to read any books that provide too many gory details about hunting, culling, and other types of wolf demise. This book, while informative and realistic about past conflict with wolves, was not overwhelmingly morbid in that respect. There were so many delightful descriptions of wolf behavior and capacity to feel love for other wolves -- it was fun to learn. Highly recommended.

The revolution begins with a walk in the woods
Revisado: 07-25-22
This book is not for the faint of heart. Rawlence's writing is both beautiful and haunting. The stories of the trees and communities that live among them will both inspire you and leave you with a deep sadness for our planet and all creatures on it. Reading this book has made me more appreciative of every tree and more aware of how my behaviors impact the forest.

Overlooked part of the opioid crisis
Revisado: 07-25-22
This book was a well-researched overview of memory loss associated with opioid use and the current opioid epidemic. I appreciated that the author had a strong focus on understanding the background and struggles of impacted patients as well as the doctors/researchers working to understand the link. This was a much-needed update to my previous understanding of how memory works. I recommend this book to anyone interested in medical research, psychology, harm reduction, or public health.

An ardent steward of the land, fearless traveler, and unrivaled observer of nature and culture, Barry Lopez died after a long illness on Christmas Day 2020. The previous summer, a wildfire had consumed much of what was dear to him in his home place and the community around it—a tragic reminder of the climate change of which he’d long warned.

I've been reading Barry Lopez's books for the last few years and this is my favorite so far. It's a deeply personal account of both his life and experiences traveling and learning. He is masterfully insightful about what it means to be a person in our point in time on Earth. Highly recommended.

Historia
Corbin College, not quite upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian—but not an historian of the Jews—is co-opted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies. Mixing fiction with nonfiction, the campus novel with the lecture, The Netanyahus is a wildly inventive comedy of blending, identity, and politics.

Make sure to read the credits (at the end)
Revisado: 06-10-22
The book was brilliant and funny. Some parts that I did not completely enjoy made a lot more sense after listening to the author's end credits-- and it allowed me to understand the historical context of the book. I particularly enjoyed the campus setting, but I work in academia so the humor / nuances might not resonate with everyone. Overall would recommend the book!
I agree with other reviewers that the sound effects--while minimal-- were unnecessary and distracting.

Historia
In the tradition of Mountains Beyond Mountains and The Orchid Thief, Stronghold is Tucker Malarkey’s eye-opening account of one of the world’s greatest fly fishermen and his crusade to protect the world’s last bastion of wild salmon. From a young age, Guido Rahr was a misfit among his family and classmates, preferring to spend his time in the natural world. When the salmon runs of the Pacific Northwest began to decline, Guido was one of the few who understood why.

Both beautifully written and narrated, and hard to put down. You don't have to have an initial love for salmon to enjoy this book- but you'll leave with a new appreciation for the fish and its ecosystem.

Historia
When writer Rebecca Giggs encountered a humpback whale stranded on her local beachfront in Australia, she began to wonder how the lives of whales reflect the condition of our oceans. Fathoms: The World in the Whale is “a work of bright and careful genius” (Robert Moor, New York Times best-selling author of On Trails), one that blends natural history, philosophy, and science to explore: How do whales experience ecological change? How has whale culture been both understood and changed by human technology?

A must-read
Revisado: 05-24-21
It's really easy to (often unfairly) finger-point and blame someone for a negative health outcome, whether that outcome is addiction, overdose, or something else. It is more difficult to understand how corporate practices (such as targeted and deceptive marketing) can have a widespread and detrimental impact on the health of our communities as a whole. In addition to telling the appalling story of the Sackler family, Keefe excellently explains the bigger picture of the opioid epidemic-- how our justice, corporate, and medical systems failed the American public yet still tried to blame the individual.
