Historia
Rain slicked streets, riots, murder, chaos. It’s July 1992 and the Troubles in Northern Ireland are still grinding on after twenty-five apocalyptic years. Detective Inspector Sean Duffy got his family safely over the water to Scotland, to “Shortbread Land”. Duffy’s a part-timer now, only returning to Belfast six days a month to get his pension. It’s an easy gig, if he can keep his head down.

Trenchant and funny and thrilling
Revisado: 03-29-25
Another terrific entry in in this series - McKinty is not just a great crime writer; he’s a first-rate novelist.

Funny, smart - great prose, great characters. Brilliant as McKinty’s Duffy stories always are. Highly recommended.

Historia
At first glance, Jellicoe Close seems to be a perfect suburban street – well-kept houses with pristine lawns, neighbours chatting over garden fences, children playing together. But there are dark secrets behind the neat front doors, hidden dangers that include a ruthless criminal who will stop at nothing. It’s up to DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent to uncover the truth. Posing as a couple, they move into the Close, blurring the lines between professional and personal as never before.

Not the best in the series
Revisado: 04-13-23
Lacked some of the drama and tension of other books in the series. And Sarah Coombes is missed - she was a much better fit for the character than Caroline Lennon, who is altogether too plummy-voiced to be believable as Maeve.

Historia
After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom. When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong.

As much as I miss Sean Duffy - and I hope we’ll see his return soon! - I’m glad to see Adrian McLinty have some real success. This is a great listen - exciting and engaging.

In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation. In riveting prose, These Truths tells the story of America, beginning in 1492, to ask whether the course of events has proven the nation's founding truths or belied them.

Brilliant book, okay narration
Revisado: 12-25-18
Excellent text, but a mediocre reading, with some obvious mistakes, repetitions, sounds of pages turning - and, for some reason, the entire epilogue repeated twice. Authors really shouldn’t read their own work . . .
