Great characters. Emotionally powerful. Only, it’s a bit too long. I hope my book club reads this so that we can talk about it.

Historia
When Nell’s father makes a deathbed declaration that hints at a long-held secret, it reignites feelings of isolation that have plagued her for years. Her suspicions about the family’s past only deepen when her mother, Annie, who is losing her memories to dementia, starts making cryptic comments of her own. Thirty-five years earlier, Annie’s life was upended by a series of traumas - one shock after another that she buried deep in her heart. The decisions she made at the time were motivated by love, but she knew even then that nobody could ever understand what she did.

Heartfelt
Revisado: 04-15-24
You can feel the pain & torment of the characters. Interesting turn of events. The many monologues go on too long. The book could be a lot shorter & get the message across. For me the narrator was too dramatic. It was unsettling to listen to. The sisters could have been more developed and they were left out pretty much in the end.

Historia
When eight-year-old Kathy Stone turns up on the side of the road a year after her abduction, the world awaits her harrowing story. But Kathy doesn’t say a word. Good narration.

It moved a bit slow and could be shorter. Disturbing story line. I wished Robin could handle her mother’s abuse and let her mother know she wouldn’t stand for it any longer.

Historia
According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Interesting story. Very detailed. That’s good & bad. I like learning about other cultures and Lisa See is a master teacher. It was very hard to read about the foot binding of young girls and their life-long debilitation resulting from it.

Historia
In the opening pages of Jamie Ford's stunning debut, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

Chop chop
Revisado: 02-17-23
I really enjoyed the story and being told in Henry’s perspective was excellent. However, the narrator spoke very slow & choppy. I was trying to figure out if it was meant to sound foreign to American ears or not. I tried to speed up the narration a bit to make it flow smoother, but usually the sound is worse when you do. It seemed like Henry & Keiko were wise beyond their age in many respects, but that didn’t bother me. Children of war, I suppose, grow up fast.

Historia
After everything that the citizens of Beartown have gone through, they are struck yet another blow when they learn that their beloved local hockey team will soon be disbanded. What makes it worse is the obvious satisfaction that all the former Beartown players, who now play for a rival team in Hed, take in that fact. Amidst the mounting tension between the two rivals, a surprising newcomer is handpicked to be Beartown's new hockey coach. Soon a new team starts to take shape around Amat, the fastest player you'll ever see; Benji, the crazed lone wolf; and Vidar, a born-to-be-bad troublemaker.

Historia
California girl Lola has her life all set up: business degree, handsome fiancé, fast track career, when suddenly, without warning, everything tragically implodes. After years fruitlessly searching for love, marriage, and children, she decides to seek spirituality and meaning far outside the parameters of modern life in the insular, ultraorthodox enclave of Boro Park, Brooklyn. There, fate brings her to the dysfunctional home of newly-widowed Jacob, a devout Torah scholar, whose life is also in turmoil, and whose small children ache for the kindness of a womanly touch.

Many truths about Human nature
Revisado: 09-12-21
The story could have been a 5 if it weren’t for a couple of things.
1. The story dragged on too long. Too much explanation about every detail.
2. From what I know if the Ultra-Orthodox sects, children are not taught to read & write in English They know their Hebrew birthdays but not their Gregorian dates. Reading English signs in the Train Station would have been impossible nor is it likely for the conductor to understand her birthday when spoken in Hebrew. The author has great knowledge of Biblical history and human nature and this story does pull on some heart-strings.

Ash goes over the case of two young women, Mary Ashford and Barbara Forrest who were murdered 157 years apart in Erdington. The way that the two cases mirror each other is just so bonkers and will have you questioning if some kind of Fear Street witch cursed the area. Oh also there’s a trial by combat, so there’s that. Sorry Folks!
Revisado: 08-11-21
I'd probably like these podcasts if it weren't for the swearing. I once heard someone say that intelligent people needn’t swear because they should have the vocabulary to not have to. Or, you could put it this way, swearing makes you appear unintelligent. I know that a lot of people see nothing wrong with using the "F" word liberally, but it just doesn’t appeal to me and I’m not a prude. I do like the banter between the two hosts, I find them very interesting & intelligent. Just tired of fowl language.

Historia
It is the turn of the 18th century in Frankfurt, Germany, and young Gutle and Meir Amschel Rothschild struggle to establish themselves in the cramped, restricted Judengasse. But when Meir’s talents as a novice banker catch the attention of a German prince, Meir is afforded entrée into the European world of finance and nobility, and the Rothschilds’ lives are changed forever. As proud as Gutle is of her husband’s success, she is also cautious - very much aware of the fact that her husband’s rise is tied to his patrons’ willingness to “see past” his Jewishness.

A Rothschild history lesson
Revisado: 04-25-20
I listened to the audiobook version. The narrator brought more life to Gutelah Rothschild than reading it would have. Five stars as the voice kept calling me back to listen to the end. I love historical fiction and learning about people such the Meir & Gutelah Rothschild.
