This is modern politicized & feminzed scifi. You'll hear words like "mansplaning" in the first 20 minutes. The female characters are the girl-boss or prodigy archetype while the male character is the low confidence doofus. The performance is okay but sounds more like a daytime soap drama. All the strong, intelligent, or brave characters are female, all the rude, bad, or weak characters are men. This is junk. Shame because it seemed like the story could go somewhere. You can fast forward to any chapter and any time stamp and you have a 80% chance of hearing a female lead conversation and if you hear a male voice he's a doofus, rude, or weak. I am not sexist nor do I prefer exclusively male lead stories, I love strong & powerful female characters when done right and not at the expense of the male character or story itself like Underworld, Resident Evil, Freiren, etc... Not worth the time, even for free unless you enjoy feminest propaganda scifi and no judgement if that's what you're into.

This is only the second time in my reading career I've given up on a book only 2 hours in, here is my criticism, I'm sure some people will enjoy it but not for fans of real scifi.

This is more of a mystery & conspiracy story with a splash of "who done it" and not really science fiction. The conspiracy happens in a psuedo scifi environment but this is not science fiction, this is a story about people doing people things. The book feels like it was written for teenagers, the ships malfunctions are very obviously sabotage from the start and the reader is just waiting for the characters to catchup but there is no sense of urgency and the main character seems limp and timid almost like a guy at his corporate accounting job with no real authority. The narrator (perhaps directed to do so) has a habit of pronouncing all the spanish names like you would in a spanish speaking country heavily rolling the R's and J becomes H, you know what I mean. This is fairly odd and jaring, there are memes about this kind of speech, I've only ever seen people on TV (usually the news) talk like this and it always comes across cringey. Overall I guess cringey is the best way to describe the entire thing, at least the 2 hours I've listened to so far. Anyways, I'm going back to Expeditionary Force for some good quality scifi! I'll leave this book for the people who enjoy mystery/conspiracy nonsense.

TLDR: book is cringe, 2 hours in and is more of a mystery/conspiracy than a scifi, the book seems more people focused than plot focused. If you enjoy mystery/conspiracy perhaps you will enjoy this more than I did.

70% of the scenes have so much echo it sounds like they’re all in a bathroom. I understand this is a drama but it’s poorly done. Effects are also as loud as some dialogue, I have excellent hearing and had a hard time hearing & focusing on the dialogue. It took all my will to not give up. The story is okay but the poor audio mix makes this a “skip” in my opinion.

So you finished the 3 body trilogy, should you read this 4th fan made only later to become canon book? Cixin Liu felt it so good to add it to the trilogy so its worth your time. This 4th book digs deeper into everything and provides the answers the 3rd book never gave us. Yes it comes from the mind of Bashou instead of Cixin Liu and it's absolutely amazing. Epic is the only way I can describe it. I lack the literary ability to describe the greatness of this book or how it made me feel so I'll leave you with this: read the darn thing, it's that simple.

If you liked the other 5 books (or 9 if you count Mech Wars) of this series then you gotta finish it off with this one. As always Narration was excellent and we learn more about the world and who the progenitors are. Space battles continue to be epic, big, and lengthy which is awesome! The first book of this trilogy pointed out the problems with left leaning politics, the second book pointed out the problems with right leaning politics, the third book pointed out the problem with governments as a whole. Ultimately the political commentary is very neutral and even handed. After reading 10 books from this author I cannot guess his political views and that's a good thing! If you like action packed space books that are easy to read and easy to follow you gotta check this series out!

Narration and story are both excellent, in the previous book the fallacy of liberal madness was shown to us and now in book 2 the fallacy of right wing madness is shown to us. I like that the Author was able to take equal jabs at pointing out extremism is never a good thing regardless of the belief system and what's most important is people working together. We continue to learn more about the story and how things unfold and it's entertaining with more epic space battles that are fairly long. This book like the last is very action packed with its battles and I loved that. I wish the character Rug got a little more screen time but I understand the book is not about her. I also would have loved to see Tort make a return, I felt he was underutilized in the first trilogy (Ixan Prohecy). Ultimately I very much enjoyed Book 2 of the Ixan Legacy and have since finished the entire trilogy. That makes 10 books from Scott I've finished now. Always a fun read as long as you don't take politics too seriously.

I read the first 3 Ixan books, the 4 Mech War books, and then Capital Star Ship. Capital Star Ship certainly is more political than the other 7 books of this universe but after finishing the book I couldn't tell you what the political stance of the Author is which tells me it was delivered in a way that was fairly neutral and intelligent. Some reviewers felt Husher (MC) is supposed to be Trump but that's totally wrong. For anyone that's read Mech Wars you'd know Husher actually leans liberal and even got made fun of for that. The Author takes jabs at both extreme sides of the political spectrum in a way that is relatable to todays modern politcal madness (on both sides). This is not a right-wing or left-wing book. It's written in a mostly neutral manner and the author takes turns pointing out how each side takes things too far with their extreme ideologies. If you read this and felt your political views were attacked you may be an extremist yourself and I'd suggest you take a breath and finish the series. Personally I'm politcally center right and I agree with the jabs the Author took at the extreme right as well as left so please don't pass on this book because you're scared it will be too woke or too right wing, it's neither! Okay now on to the ACTUAL REVIEW: Narration is outstanding, Hushers gotten a little soft in book 4 but he's doing his best. We get tons of space battles that are long and action packed! Readers of Scott Bartlett will know Scott is known for books that are easy to read, easy to follow, and action packed. Scott's books don't have too many plot twists & turns or earthbreaking info dumps but there are a few and they're nicely done. Those looking for super deep character development or a crazy deep dive into the tech may not find it here. What you get here is an entertaining military scifi book that's a lot of fun.

Edit, I've now finished the entire Ixan Universe book series (all 6 books plus the 4 Mech War books) and I very much enjoyed all of it. The narration is first class and all of it was extremely well done. I look forward to reading (listening) to more of Scotts books.

I read this after reading book 4 of the Ixan series (Capital Starship) and I felt it was perfectly timed since the characters of Mech Wars play a major part in book 5 of the Ixan series (Pride of the Fleet) but you can read Mech Wars as a stand alone if you wish though I would not suggest you read the Ixan books without Mech Wars in between the two trilogies. The narration is outstanding and the story is very action packed with long space battles that really feel like you're in the action! Another reviewer wrote this is great for fans of Halo, Mass Effect, or other sci fi games. The story isn't crazy deep nor are there great reveals or plot twists but the story is easy to follow and there are TONS of battles that are action packed and really awesome! I see some viewers felt the book was too political but as far as scifi goes this book is not political at all and after reading it I couldn't guess the Authors political stance so I feel the few bits of politics here and there were well delivered, the last 3 books of the Ixan universe do get fairly political but still manage to tow the line in a balanced way. I've read 9 books by this Author and I find them all easy to follow and very entertaining. Anyone who reads scifi for fun & entertainment should like this series. Scifi elitist or those looking for serous depth may not enjoy the read as much.

I really wanted to like this since it's right up my alley but despite finishing it I couldn't bring myself to care for even a second about any of it. Maybe coming from Three Body & Shards of Earth set expectations too high but almost immidiately I felt like this had to be a sequal, I thought to myself I must be missing something, context is constantly lacking, I'm constantly lost, and I can't keep track of the characters nor do I care about any of them. I even went to google to see if this was a sequal and maybe I had missed something but that wasn't the case. Anyway, I still think people should give this book a shot since its short and has overwhelmingly positive reviews so maybe I'm just the odd man out on this one.
