excellent book on excellence

Really helpful, toothsome, and concrete. Not simplyong blathering. But the German accent was pronounced. Sometimes it was difficult to follow it.

Historia
In this illuminating audiobook, Thomas Kidd draws on his expertise in American religious history to retrace the arc of this spiritual movement, illustrating just how historically peculiar that political and ethnic definition (white Republican) of evangelicals is. He examines distortions in the public understanding of evangelicals and shows how a group of “Republican insider evangelicals” aided the politicization of the movement. This book will be a must-listen for those trying to better understand the shifting religious and political landscape of America today.

Distracting mispronunciations
Revisado: 05-11-20
Good information, and Kidd nails his case. It is discouraging to see how evangelicals became politicized, when the heart of being an Evangelical is the gospel. Also, the reader mispronounced several names, and it was annoying, distracting from the content.

If all books on personal finance were as wise, sensible, and fun to listen to as this, we'd all be a little less stinky with our money. Really good sentences, here. Flawless performance. Fresh insights on a well-worn topic.

Favorite Non-fiction book so far in 2017
Revisado: 10-28-17
I really loved and profited from this book, and intend to listen to it several times. Duhigg shares great, toothsome content, and illustrates it with very vivid and concrete examples. The idea of self-consciously shaping good habits, and how to do it, is (to use a very tired word) empowering.

Historia
Drawing on their own cross cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.

Solid principles with some sketchy application
Revisado: 10-28-17
This book is quite an eye-opener, and should be required reading for those who teach the Bible in cross-cultural settings. The authors use really vivid, concrete examples. Were there times I was screaming at my windshield at some funky takes and doctrinal positions? Certainly. So this book requires a bit of discernment. But you should read (listen to it) anyway. It's a bit like a cultural mirror, and you might not really like all you see.

There are a lot of myths about productivity--what it means to get things done and how to accomplish work that really matters. In our current era of innovation and information overload, it may feel harder than ever to understand the meaning of work or to have a sense of vocation or calling.

Vicar's egg... good in spots
Revisado: 03-13-15
The author is strongest when he submerged to the details. Some will find the beginning somewhat tedious if they already have embraced the values he advocates. He gives great value (eventually), but it is a slog to get to it.
I would have profited more if a pro read it.
