★★★★★ Humor, Heart, and a Touch of the Afterlife

This book had me laughing out loud with the author’s self-deprecating humor, especially in Chapter 4 when he admits he’s terrible at office politics and just shares whatever he’s thinking. Chapter 12 had me picturing him trick-or-treating 60 years earlier. Dave’s humanity shines through—from his disastrous golf game that grew, to his lack of singing talent, an apology for humor gone wrong, the passing of his adored dog, and his priceless reflections on aging. He made me both laugh at life’s absurdities and ponder the inevitability of death. I couldn’t stop crying-laughing at the story of his friend wanting to slide into heaven on a motorcycle. Beyond the humor, his imaginative take on the afterlife—especially Dave the painter—was both creative and thought-provoking. Chapter 24, reflecting on those who have “graduated” to the next life, felt surreal and deeply instructive as a middle-aged person. A perfect blend of humor, heart, and reflection!
