Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

I wanted to hug Sam many times
Revisado: 08-27-23
Such a feel good book. I loved it. Sam and his family go through trauma and tragedy but are so strong -his mom would say it was her faith- but there was much more to each of them. My heart broke for Sam as a young schoolboy but finds the best 1st grade friend a child could have. Good values, strong ethics, smart, giving, sweet, but not perfect, Sam will steal your heart. Don’t miss this wonderful book!

Historia
Maine, 1969. After losing her parents in a car accident, aspiring artist Annalisa Mancuso lives with her grandmother and their large Italian family in the stifling factory town of Payton Mills. Inspired by her mother, whose own artistic dreams disappeared in a damaged marriage, Annalisa is dedicated only to painting. Closed off to love, and driven as much by her innate talent as she is the disillusionment of her past, Annalisa just wants to come into her own.

Beautiful family tale
Revisado: 06-23-23
This was a beautiful tale of family but mostly about a young woman who didn’t let the many bumps in the road stop her. Tons of love, projected here. While the story was somewhat predictable it was in the telling that made me enjoy it. Plus I lived in Bar Harbor as a child and still go back to the island every year. Most enjoyable.

Historia
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

Revisado: 12-22-22
Maggie O’Farrell has created another novel which grabs the reader and doesn’t let go. The characters are very well drawn, the story beautifully told. The author is very gifted using language that brings the era to life. The reader is perfect for this story. A great read!

Historia
Frederick Law Olmsted is arguably the most important historical figure that the average American knows the least about. Best remembered for his landscape architecture, from New York's Central Park to Boston's Emerald Necklace to Stanford University's campus, Olmsted was also an influential journalist, early voice for the environment, and abolitionist credited with helping dissuade England from joining the South in the Civil War. This momentous career was shadowed by a tragic personal life, also fully portrayed here.

An Amazing Man
Revisado: 08-02-22
Olmsted was a genius. He accomplished so many things that were fascinating to read about, traveler, journalist, farmer, and ultimately the landscape architecture he is known for. He transformed cities private homes, college campuses etc. I loved this book and this man!

Historia
It’s 1929 in New York City. In an apartment high above Lexington Avenue, the painter Georgia O’Keeffe feels stuck. At 42, she should be at the apex of her powers as an artist, and yet something is missing. Her husband - the gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who helped build her reputation in the art world - has grown needy and insecure, not to mention unfaithful. More than this, her work has lost its fire, and she knows it. The calla lilies and poppies for which she is revered now seem careful, predictable.

Georgia O’Keefe is a fascinating person. I have read many books about her. This book focuses on her introduction to the southwest and the passion she developed for it. Great research, reader is excellent. I wish it had gone on and on.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

The Dutch House
Revisado: 01-31-20
For some reason I have been reading lots of books about dysfunctional families and this is yet another. I didn’t love it though the writing is wonderful and the characters and relationships well drawn. I found Tom Hanks distracts from the story- I would have preferred an “anonymous” voice. I love Tom Hanks but not as a book reader.

Excellent, exciting story and it is true!
Revisado: 10-12-17
Italy during WW2 was a very complicated country. My husband and I both really enjoyed this story of Milan residents enduring the war. The reader is exceptional and the story is full of twists and turns right to the end. Yes it is another story about war but this one is one of the best.

Revisado: 08-01-15
Fascinating, eventful and charming. I loved it! Stevenson was an engaging and creative character, Fanny a devoted and loving wife. Through all the turmoil they remained dedicated to one another. The reader is gifted and makes a the story come alive with feeling. Her use of accents adds dimension.
