Historia
The entire town of Eternity was shocked when widowed middle-aged Twyla Banneker partnered up with her neighbor and best friend, Frank Ellis, to join the Tanrian Marshals. Eight years later, Twyla’s rewarding career patrolling the strange land of Tanria remains a welcome change from the domestic grind of mom life, despite the misgivings of her grown children. When they discover the body of one of their fellow marshals near an enormous footprint—and Frank finds himself the inadvertent foster dad to a baby dragon—they are grateful to be back in action.

This was a delight. It's silly and sweet, and it has a lot of heart. I liked the first, but I loved the second adventure in this world.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Unexpectedly wholesome, but...
Revisado: 01-07-25
I started to feel like halfway through writing this, the devil on Stephen King's shoulder started going, "No, Stevie, ha-ha, you can't just write a simple adventure about a boy who wants to pay a blessing forward, befriends a lonely old man, and braves a scary, magical new world for a beloved dog. You're Stephen King! Give the protagonist a little more darkness in his heart, Stevie. Nudge up the gruesome violence a few more notches, Stevie. You've got to give the people what they expect, ha-ha!"
Yeah, yeah, a lot of old fairytales are dark, I get it. The theme still would have worked with 25% less angst. Still a solid 4/5 for me, and now I know one time Stephen King came perilously close to writing cozy fantasy, which will be a fun thing to bring up at parties.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Despite the stakes being as high as the destruction of several whole entire solar systems, this is peak cozy sci-fi.

This is such a hopeful, funny, warm read. Though there are dire situations and some secondary character deaths, the main characters are delightful, the science is fun and interesting, and the big story beats are incredibly satisfying. Highly recommend.

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there. Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth.

Adjust your coziness expectations. This is heavier than the first one.
Revisado: 09-11-24
I loved seeing these delightful characters again, but I missed some of the relentlessly hopeful, comforting feel of the first book (which I have read at least 5 times).
The world here feels a little less whimsical and separate from our own, straying out of the realm of metaphor and introducing real prejudices from our world, as well as dedicating a lot more to the traumas touched on in the first book. There is emphasis on taking a stand against injustice. The old feel-good theme of softening and changing minds and hearts is actively challenged here, where we meet villains who are given barely any crumbs of complexity, which I found a tad disappointing in a book about not dehumanizing people...but maybe it's just acknowledging an uglier side of humanity, one that's uncomfortable (and pretty depressing) to think about.
If you're like me, and the first book gave you a dose of hope and a safe escape when you needed it, maybe just adjust your expectations a notch. This has a lot of the same charm and humor, some beautiful moments that made me tear up, and a happy ending, but I regret diving in expecting to have my world-weary heart soothed once again, because listening has left me a little more world-weary than when I started.

Not As Good As Moving Castle
Revisado: 09-09-24
Unlike Howl's Moving Castle, there are elements to this book that haven't exactly aged like fine wine. In spite of some sensitivity issues, there's a fun story at the core. Weakest of the three but still charming.

Good read, sometimes seems to be trying a little too hard to be gritty.
Revisado: 05-07-24
I love most of these skeevy, funny characters, but, like... okay we get it, it's disgusting here. If you take a shot every time bodily waste comes up or someone threatens to do something creatively violent to genitals, you'll quickly die of alcohol poisoning.

Historia
Having somehow convinced Lady Annika Jenoure to marry him, all Finlay Ashowan wants to do is settle down, cook some good meals, and enjoy a quiet life in Daxaria. But fate has different plans. Fin’s father, Aidan Helmer, fire witch and servant of King Matthias of Troivack, has arrived in the kingdom with devastating news: Annika’s brother Charles has been taken prisoner, and the only way his life will be spared is if Annika or Fin goes to plead his case. Given that an attack from Troivack is imminent, there’s no way some trickery isn’t involved in this plot.

This series has a lot of imperfections, but I still finished it and had a good time. I think this one is a little stronger than the second book. It definitely leans darker than the first two, but the heavier moments felt earned and necessary. I'm so glad Kraken's voice changed.

Historia
As a wielder of domestic magic, Finlay Ashowan likes to keep his affairs as neat and orderly as his kitchen. But between his work for the King and Queen of Daxaria and a new (secret) relationship with Lady Annika Jenoure, his life is anything but tidy. For one thing, if Annika and Fin are to continue their romance, they’ll need to sort out the pesky issue of Fin’s being a commoner—before Annika is forced into a political marriage that interferes with her own carefully laid plans. For another, pressure is mounting as the war with Troivack draws ever closer.

Still fun, but the flaws of the first book are amplified here.
Revisado: 05-07-24
I still had a pretty good time with the storyline, but sometimes the prose is quite clumsy. I felt like I was listening to a really good writer's totally unedited rough draft, if that makes sense. It is drowning in unnecessary adverbs and weird (and sometimes downright inaccurate) dialogue tags, and I just about threw my phone across the room when I heard "the redhead" for the 50th time in thirty minutes. I found it extremely distracting. Just say "he"! Just say the character's name! Fin's characterization also shifts a little too quickly for my taste. He went from being a prickly jerk who couldn't get along with anyone in the first book to being so charming he can make friends with everyone. Despite that, I still found myself invested in the characters and their drama. I wish it had gotten a few more rounds of edits or something.

When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

Revisado: 05-07-24
I had a great time. The story is fun and cozy-adjacent. Putting "humorous" in the title feels like an oversell, but there are a few chuckle-worthy moments and it is very charming. I think it could have used a tighter edit. The narrator is wonderful except a small handful of weird choices on character voices.
