Monotone narrator
Revisado: 02-27-19
I just started listening but I wish I’d listen to the sample. The book sounds interesting but the narrator has the most boring, inflection free manner that I may not be able to stick it out.

Couldn’t listen to that awful voice...
Revisado: 03-31-18
I can’t rate the story or the overall performance because the voice of the dead boy was so grating and awful I could not listen further.
Too bad. Maybe I’ll try this one in print.

Historia
In 1886, Gretta Pope wakes one morning to discover that her husband is gone. Ulysses Pope has left his family behind on the far edge of Minnesota’s western prairie, with only the briefest of notes and no explanation for why he left or where he’s headed. It doesn’t take long for Gretta’s young sons, Eli and Danny, to set off after him, following the scant clues they can find, jumping trains to get where they need to go, and ending up in the rugged badlands of Montana.

Great story, beautifully written
Revisado: 01-17-15
The main characters were very well described, their strengths, weaknesses, hopes and struggles fully revealed and explored. The story resonated with truth. The prose was spare but elegant, and well suited to the setting.
I didn't enjoy the raspy voice of the narrator, but think it suited the book.
I appreciated the historical perspective, especially the references to the early explorations and plans of the Smithsonian. As a native Washingtonian, I spent many hours in the Natural History Museum, and am grateful for the foresight and risks the early curators took to preserve an essential part of our country's history.

An old Chinese proverb says "Women hold up half the sky." Then why do the women of Africa and Asia persistently suffer human rights abuses? What made the experience of listening to Half the Sky the most enjoyable?
The speakers were also the authors, which gave credence to this travesty. I was so moved that I've recommended it to my book group and support some of the assistance organizations indexed. The narration is honest.
Any additional comments?
A must-read for anyone concerned with the plight of women and social-justice issues--will really open your eyes.

Didn't like the narrator's style.
Revisado: 07-06-14
If you could sum up The Prince of Tides in three words, what would they be?
Love the story
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Frank Muller?
I did not like the tone the narrator used. He made Tom sound belligerent, overly sarcastic, and not very likeable. Having read the book twice before listening to this recording, I was disappointed in the way Tom was portrayed, compared to my picture of him from reading the book.

Informative and well presented
Revisado: 07-06-14
Where does Customs of the World: Using Cultural Intelligence to Adapt, Wherever You Are rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Having had a lifelong interest in diversity and the ways of other cultures, I found this lecture series to impart a wealth of information. The professor was engaging and extremely well-traveled and informed. He shared a personal and valuable insight into the patterns of other cultures and how they think and act, offering many illustrations. Having recently traveled to SE Asia for the first time, it shed light on some of my perceptions and experiences, and encouraged me to appreciate even more all the fascinating and wonderful people who share the world. I especially appreciated his discussion of the importance of being open to experiencing new foods, music, religious beliefs, and etiquette in order to fully engage and benefit from the beauty and wonder of those less familiar to me.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Customs of the World: Using Cultural Intelligence to Adapt, Wherever You Are?
The discussion of how the importance of family, food, and religious beliefs color customs and culture in various groups.
Have you listened to any of Professor David Livermore’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I'd like to hear more of his insights.
What insight do you think you’ll apply from Customs of the World: Using Cultural Intelligence to Adapt, Wherever You Are?
The importance of one being respectful, accepting, and open to the different customs of the world's inhabitants to fully be a member of the human race in all its diversity.

Historia
From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees, a magnificent novel about two unforgettable American women. Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world - and it is now the newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Excellent Historical Fiction
Revisado: 01-28-14
What made the experience of listening to The Invention of Wings the most enjoyable?
I loved the voices of the speakers, Handfull and Sarah, and found them very compelling.
What did you like best about this story?
This was an accurate description of life in the South during the slave era, and the fact that it was based on a true character (Sarah Grimke) made it more interesting and believable.
Who was the most memorable character of The Invention of Wings and why?
It's hard to choose between Sarrah and Handfull, but I think Handfull's perceptions, observations, and descriptions were so well done.
Any additional comments?
This is my favorite of the author's books, and I highly recommend it. I will read "Twelve Years a Slave" with greater understanding.
