Historia
On a cold November evening, Guido Brunetti and Paola are up late when a call from his colleague Ispettore Vianello arrives, alerting the Commissario that a hand has been seen in one of Venice’s canals. The body is soon found, and Brunetti is assigned to investigate the murder of an undocumented Sri Lankan immigrant. Because no official record of the man’s presence in Venice exists, Brunetti is forced to use the city’s far richer sources of information: gossip and the memories of people who knew the victim.

Tedious start building to a strong finale
Revisado: 06-02-23
The dialogue was sometimes slow and tedious but the book crescendoed into a strong finale with a meaningful message. I have read all of the series and look forward to the next.

A farang is dead and the Bangkok police have a confession the next morning from a young paint-thinner addict. He claims he killed Ben Hoadly, an expat Brit, but Calvino has his doubts when he sees heavy bruises on the kid's face. In no time, Calvino is working both sides, out to find the killer for Hoadly's wealthy father, and eager to clear the addict's name for a beautiful friend who runs a charity in the slums.

Tasteless
Revisado: 05-13-21
Crude images as well as foul language spoiled this book for me. The author has an intimate, detailed knowledge of Bangkok and its neighborhoods. Vincent is a colorful character with a morose sense of humor a la Brooklyn, a real New York personality. How he ends up in Thailand is beyond me but his experiences provide insider knowledge of the expat community. I like detective stories from other lands and have read most of Donna Leon, Camillieri and Martin Walker. Not sure I will read further into this series.

This was an entertaining story but so garbled by the reader, the author. His French is too guttural rendering it difficult to decipher. Reading the novel may have been more pleasurable than listening.

Franco- Russian Affairs
Revisado: 07-03-20
A complicated tale grounded by the fascinating recent history of foreign relations between France and Russia over the two World Wars even with a brief reference to Napoleon and his involvement with the Russians. Bruno, the indefatigable ladies’ man, embarrasses himself in this novel, jeopardizing his career and his integrity but he perseveres assuring us of continued entertainment in the Perigord region of France with its rich culture of wine, hearty food and its bucolic countryside. The reader’s Russian accent was colorful; his French lacks subtlety.

Historia
Bruno is a former soldier who has embraced the pleasures and slow rhythms of country life - living in his restored shepherd's cottage; patronizing the weekly market; sparring with, and basically ignoring, the European Union bureaucrats from Brussels. He has a gun but never wears it; he has the power to arrest but never uses it. But then the murder of an elderly North African who fought in the French army changes everything and galvanizes Bruno's attention.

Four not five stars
Revisado: 09-11-19
I love the way Walker weaves crime investigation with historical fact. Not sure I completely understood how Bruno determined the perpetrators. This was unclear to me and spoiled it for me a bit. Also, the reader uses different English accents to somehow portray different French accents. Somewhat strange to me but on the whole this listen was enjoyable and I’m on to the second book in the series.

Historia
Count Falier urges his Venetian son-in-law Guido Brunetti to investigate, and preferably intervene in, the seemingly innocent plan of the Count's best friend, the elderly Gonzalo Rodriguez de Tejada, to adopt a much younger man as his son. Under arcane Italian inheritance laws this man would then be heir to Gonzalo's entire fortune, a prospect Gonzalo's friends find appalling. Then Gonzalo unexpectedly, and literally, drops dead on the street, and his good friend Berta Dodson, just arrived in Venice for the memorial service, is strangled in her hotel room.

Historia
Interest in Andrea Camilleri's taciturn but epicurean inspector is at an all-time high. And with three of the last five novels in the series, including the award-winning The Potter's Field, hitting the New York Times bestseller list, this latest installment is certain to up the ante and win over a multitude of new fans. In Treasure Hunt, Inspector Montalbano is hailed as a hero after news cameras film him scaling abuilding, gun in hand, to capture a pair of unlikely snipers. Shortly thereafter the inspector begins to receive cryptic messages in verse from someone challenging him to a treasure hunt. Intrigued, he accepts, treating the messages as amusing riddles - until they take a dangerous turn.

Revisado: 10-10-17
Listening to this clipped British accent loses all the flavor and intonation of the book. I couldn’t even get through the second chapter. Why would you do this? I’d like a refund.

Poor Listening
Revisado: 01-10-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The reader was unintelligible. I couldn't finish the novel because I couldn't understand the the reader who barreled ahead without any of the important pauses or intonations that are so important in a reading
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He was terrible and it was so exasperating to the listener

Foul, fowl and factual
Revisado: 10-16-16
Loved the story of immigrant parents' and first generation's struggles to assimilate in America, realizing that their differences and mores gave them an advantage although hard work and smarts were essential. Poignant tale told with a few too many four letter words but laced with colorful and often hilarious stories and commentary. I will exercise more care with my future wine choices after reading Restaurant Man!
