Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Moving for a kid from Appalachia.
Revisado: 04-25-24
I grew up in upper East Tennessee (Bristol) not far from Unicoi county. I had lots of friends on the "Virginia side" too. It was hard living. Everyone pretty much hated the police, drugs were rampant, and mobile home living was the standard. It was odd that most kids had no dreams beyond their surrounding reality. I, fortunately, could play sports (baseball) and did not suffer the type of injury that Damon suffered in the book. I was fortunate enough to have people show me grace, even when I would self-destruct, and allowed me to have space and get back on the path. Did not work out that way for many others. This is about a seemingly forgotten people in a part of the world where no one seems to care. It's not the urban jungle but the circumstances aren't really that much different. This book is provocative and entertaining at the same time. Well worth the listen.

Amazing true story of how faith, kindness, loyalty, discipline, and grit paid off!
Revisado: 04-25-24
I was unfamiliar with the story of Jim Haslam. I had heard talk of this family and its head leader for many years. However, I was not aware of his participation in Tennessee football and, in particular, the 1951 national championship team. What Mr. Haslam learned from General Robert Neyland and countless others he put into practice in his own life, personally and professionally. There's no guarantee in this world, but if you do the things Mr. Haslam did, 9 times out of 10 it's going to work out for you. This is an entertaining and instruct read. I am very thankful he wrote this book. Having lost my mother during my college years, I can empathize with the Haslam children. The way they all persevered through such a tremendous personal challenge is inspiring.

Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

A must listen
Revisado: 02-06-24
A comprehensive and enlightening review of one of the greatest Americans to ever live. Very likely one of the most forward thinking individuals of that era. The sadness of it is we must consider all those bright minds that were snuffed out due to ignorance and injustice. My heart is broken for the tragedy he endured but filled with hope given all that he was able to accomplish during his remarkable life. Everyone needs to listen to this book!

Historia
The fourth and final year of the Civil War offers one of that era’s most compelling narratives, defining the nation and one of history’s great turning points. Now, S.C. Gwynne’s Hymns of the Republic addresses the time Ulysses S. Grant arrives to take command of all Union armies in March 1864 to the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox a year later. He breathes new life into the epic battle between Lee and Grant; the advent of 180,000 black soldiers in the Union army; Sherman’s March to the Sea; the rise of Clara Barton; and much more.

I really enjoyed this book and No Easy Day. I am thankful for Mark and all the other soldiers that have or will put themselves in harm's way for each other and, more particularly, for people like me and my family and friends. Finally, if you are looking to be a Navy Seal, you must read Mark's books. It should be required reading.
