Historia
In 1877, Chief Standing Bear's Ponca Indian tribe was forcibly removed from their Nebraska homeland and marched to Oklahoma - known then as Indian Territory - in what became the tribe's own Trail of Tears. "I Am a Man" chronicles what happened when Standing Bear set off on a 600-mile walk to return the body of his only son to their traditional burial grounds.

I Am a Man should be read by every American. It’s part of our history. Powerful, interesting, impactful. It reads like a novel but is a true story.

Historia
At the dawn of the 20th century, a great confidence suffused America. Isaac Cline was one of the era's new men, a scientist who believed he knew all there was to know about the motion of clouds and the behavior of storms. The idea that a hurricane could damage the city of Galveston, Texas, where he was based, was to him preposterous, "an absurd delusion." It was 1900, a year when America felt bigger and stronger than ever before. Nothing in nature could hobble the gleaming city of Galveston, then a magical place that seemed destined to become the New York of the Gulf.

The storm doesn’t hit until the end of the book.
Revisado: 02-26-25
Most of the book was about the current state of weather forecasting and its progress. While I am generally interested in that sort of thing I felt that the storyline was rather dry. (No play on words intended.) I think the problem was that I did not establish an emotional attachment to Isaac in his journey through weather forecasting. I didn’t really like him and therefore I was left with dry facts. The last chapters describing the hurricane and its aftermath were fascinating. I just had to weather many chapters to get there.

Enjoyable from beginning to end!
Revisado: 02-15-25
I’m usually drawn to non fiction but this was a nice change of pace. I was afraid it might devolve into a Lifetime movie kind of book, but it did not. Jenkins Reid kept the story line believable while being exciting and engrossing. I believe I’ll try another of her books!

It seemed like science fiction horror, with talking
animals and a boarded-up house, but it is something else much more interesting.
