DNF - but over a specific issue
Revisado: 09-23-22
I am enjoyed this but the awareness of grieving process is lacking, which is problematic. Like grieving for many people doesn't end with the burial. So the relationships in this story are overlaid with grief, and some of the main characters seem wholly unaware of it. Why aren't they working with a mental health professional through their grief??? Pretty sure the dad wouldn't be married again and would be trying a bunch of new hobbies instead if he was getting professional help. That marriage is full of red flags too. It's a Dateline waiting to happen.
Anyway, the story and performance are enjoyable, but I am stopping halfway through because I just couldn't go on with how the grieving process was handled by the characters.

Vex and Vax have always been outsiders. A harsh childhood in the elite elven city of Syngorn quickly taught them not to rely on others. Now, freed from the expectations of their exacting father and the scornful eyes of Syngorn’s elves, the cunning hunter and the conning thief have made their own way in the world of Exandria. The twins have traveled far and experienced great hardship. But with the help of Vex’s quick wit and Vax’s quicker dagger, they’ve always kept ahead of trouble. Now, unknown perils await them in the bustling city of Westruun.

This was everything I wanted
Revisado: 12-02-21
I usually read romance but have been intro'd by my husband to Critical Role Campaign 2 during the pandemic. When I saw a book was coming out, I took a chance on characters I didn't know to see if I'd be interested in Campaign 1. I loved reading and listening to this book that I am going to give over my life to Campaign 1 for the next couple months.
This book covers Vax & Vex as they are early in their adventures pre Vox Machina, with flash backs to their childhood. The plot is a combination of fantasy tropes and role playing back story. But it never felt cumbersome and there were some unexpected twists. The narrators we're awesome (I will be looking for some more narrated by Robbie Daymond). Thhe different voices blended and I didn't ever hear a change in quality.
Again, I'm sacrificing my free time to Critical Role for the next while. Maybe by the time I get caught up there will be another book to enjoy.

"Just three dates. That's all I'm asking. One boy shares your sense of humor. Another has similar interests and ideals. The third boy has a helpful heart like yours." When Aditi Gupta comes home late from work as a pediatric resident one night and her grandfather offers this pitch, she reluctantly agrees. She's far too busy with med school to be dating, and besides, she dreams of a love for the ages, like her parents, not an arranged marriage. And yet she finds herself agreeing to three dates because she loves her grandfather. All she has to do is make herself utterly ineligible.

Short, Sweet, and Beautiful
Revisado: 02-24-21
This was a short listen, but very sweet with a beautiful love story. Enjoyed both narrators. Sometimes I struggle reading books that use words from a language I'm unfamiliar with, and if the text or narrator doesn't help clarify, then the audiobook is a no. So I was concerned about that going in. However, both the text and narrators made it clear in this one.

All I want for the holidays is the willpower to resist my brother’s sexy, charming, easy-on-the-eyes new business partner. Instead, I'm stuck planning all the holiday parties with the one guy who makes me want to break my dating diet. Who thought that was a good idea? Oh, me. Yep, brilliant, strategic me who raised her hand and said yes I’d love to hang mistletoe with that hot former sports star. (Note to self: Mistletoe leads to toe-curling, knee-weakening kisses.)

Nice holiday story but extra s made it
Revisado: 12-18-20
The story was a nice, low-stress listen. Perfect for me at the holidays. But the extras and outtakes with the narrator's really made this 5 stars as I work overtime to prep for my holiday time off.

Smart, humorous, and strikingly original essays by one of “America’s most bracing thinkers on race, gender, and capitalism of our time.” (Rebecca Traister) In these eight piercing explorations on beauty, media, money, and more, Tressie McMillan Cottom - award-winning professor and acclaimed author of Lower Ed - embraces her venerated role as a purveyor of wit, wisdom, and Black Twitter snark about all that is right and much that is wrong with this thing we call society.

Thick = beautiful, thought-provoking, elucidating
Revisado: 11-01-19
First off, this was an awesome experience. Dr. McMillan Cotton is an amazing, insightful writer and narrator. I wish I could have studied her essays when I was in college.
Second, these essays are rich with intersections of research and experience and popular culture, which really brought me into subjects that I as a white woman have little experience or knowledge of. I learned a whole other perspective.
Third, I loved Dr. McMillan Cotton's narration. I never felt at a loss for not having the print copy to refer to even though complexities of race, gender, and class we're discussed. Her narration kept the subject clear when it could easily have been buried in detail like with so many other scholarly writings I have encountered.

Henry's been in love with his best friend, Malcolm, since college, but after he kisses Mal on Halloween night, things go desperately wrong. Awkward turns to just plain weird when Mal mysteriously vanishes. And weird gets freaky when Henry starts to wonder if he's being haunted by Mal's ghost. Henry's other friends think he's losing it - that Mal's just run from conflict - but freaky turns to full-on crazy when, with the help of a "spirit guide", Henry casts a spell that allows him - and only him - to see and hear Malcolm, who's been right there in his house the entire time.

Revisado: 07-24-19
It's cute, funny, heartfelt, and well performed. Friends to lovers trope, ghost story, a little magic, and epic sex. I found myself laughing out loud and talking back to the audio because I was so into the book. Definitely going to watch the movie.

Romance in the Civil Rights Movement!
Revisado: 04-18-19
Alyssa Cole has another awesome historical love story. I really liked the setting - young Civil Rights activists during the '60s. It's a rich period and offered great characterization opportunities. I felt like I came to know Sophie and Ivan so much better with their interactions through the movement than I would otherwise. I also enjoyed the details and the perspective of a black woman and a Jewish man committing to Civil Rights activism. Not to say this isn't a fantastic romance, because it is. But I don't think I have ever read anything quite like this. And I loved it. A lot.
The narrator is great. I had an easy time distinguishing between characters and understanding her voice and pronunciation. She conveyed the story well. Again, I just really loved how the setting and history was used.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Great mystery short story
Revisado: 04-15-19
This was a great SF short story with a phenomenal narrator. The premise is that people who are murdered come back to life. So now there are people whose job is to end lives of those who are fatally injured or dying called dispatchers. Ending a life in order to bring a person back is called being dispatched. When a dispatcher disappears, his colleague and a police detective team up to find him.
The mystery was engaging and involved a tangle of emotional motivations. There's a lot to think on about the morality of ending a life, plus teasing out some of the implications of having murder victims come back to life. I feel like there could be more set in this world. However, this is an author I don't usually read so maybe there is more.
Zachary Quinto was a phenomenal narrator. Sometimes male narrator's female voices are obnoxious or difficult to understand. His we're great. Only problem was the last chapter the character was female, elderly, and weak so I had to turn up the volume a bit to fully catch her parts.

Not what I expected, which made it so much better
Revisado: 04-11-19
I heard Rhys Bowen recommended on Smart Podcast, Trashy Books - especially the audio. I usually read romance so this is a bit outside my genre. It's much more mystery focused with a touch of romance.
As I started listening, I kept thinking that the book might be about one thing or another, and it kept surprising me. There's lots of good description of New York at the turn of the 20th century. I could picture it well. The characters were intriguing and developed.
I loved this narrator. I had an easy time understanding her and the various voices and accents she used. Each character was different, which made it easier to follow.
I will definitely be getting the second book.
