Mixed reviews, thumb and half down.

Liked the Alaskan descriptions. Irritated by the nicknames, Baby Girl, Mad Earl and Large Marge. Older male voices annoying. Heavy dose of domestic abuse which was ugly and without redemption. Much of the story really plodded. I was tempted to quit - several times. Did skip to the end after Matthew’s accident which seemed interminable. Had I read past the 5 star reviews I wouldn’t have chosen this book. Only if you have credits to spare.

Just right when you need a good listen.
Revisado: 08-31-24
Timeless classic. Soothing story of simpler times. Good for the soul. First book I read in doctors’ spouses group I joined newly married in 1990. Loved it then, but had forgotten the story. I just remembered that it felt good - all around. Have read all of WC’s book and many short stories. This was the first listen. Just right.

Historia
Joe Talbert, Jr. has never once met his namesake. Now out of college, a cub reporter for the Associated Press in Minneapolis, he stumbles across a story describing the murder of a man named Joseph Talbert in a small town in southern Minnesota. Full of curiosity about whether this man might be his father, Joe is shocked to find that none of the town's residents have much to say about the dead man - other than that his death was long overdue....

Disappointed after The Things We Bury
Revisado: 06-09-24
I’ve never felt so ambivalent about a second book in a series. I thought The Things We Bury was very good - and very well narrated. Same narrator - but the voices, ALL, with the exception of Joe, Lila, and Jeremy I found to be extremely unpleasant and irritating. The women all sounded breathy and stupid; the men all twangy and DUM. Poorly edited, too. What happened? I thought “Buried” was very good. And the reviews I read for this one - were encouraging. I will say that I listened to the very end. But it felt like chewing on tin foil. I wish I hadn’t wasted the credit. I’ll not read any more in the series. This is my first review. I’ve enjoyed Audible and have several dozen favorites - including this author’s first book. This one - tops the list for least favorite.

Historia
In 1957, at 27 years old, Father Aloysius Schwartz of Washington, D.C. asked to be sent to one of the saddest places in the world: South Korea in the wake of the Korean War. Just a few months into his priesthood, he stepped off the train in Seoul into a dystopian film. Squatters with blank stares picked through hills of garbage. Paper-fleshed orphans lay on the streets like leftover war shrapnel. These scenes pierced him.

Modern day priest and saint!
Revisado: 04-22-24
Heroic supernatural and human virtues. Inspiring story. Riveting travelogue. One less star for narration due to the repetitious, bothersome and unnecessary “quote” / “end quote” by the narrator.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Healthy boundaries. We all know we should have them - in order to achieve work/life balance, cope with toxic people, and enjoy rewarding relationships with partners, friends, and family. Licensed counselor, sought-after relationship expert, and one of the most influential therapists on Instagram Nedra Glover Tawwab demystifies this complex topic for today's world.

Don’t judge a book by its reviews.
Revisado: 01-20-22
This book did not make me laugh or cry. But it was a good story. To call it “pro-life” is confusing. The euthanasia clinic, staff and protocols are shown in a very professional, caring and positive light. I don’t imagine that’s how it really works. Spoiler alert: I’m glad Stanley talked Eudora out of the Swiss vacation. I cheered for Eudora when she died surrounded by people who cared. I enjoyed this book but I disagree with way euthanasia was portrayed as such a careful loving considered choice.

Historia
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

Narration excellent and awful
Revisado: 06-21-21
Oliver’s voice strong; Susan’s wimpy. The narration makes Oliver come alive. He sounded like a manly man, authentic and heroic. Susan had a great deal of pluck but the narration did her character a real disservice. “Her voice” sounded weak, silly, daft.
