Remarkable...a must read
Revisado: 10-31-24
While I would never think to diminish the experience of Jews during WW2, this story of a Dutch family and what they experienced during the Japanese occupation of their home in Java, Indonesia is a story that needed to be told. One of the best books I have read/listened to.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

As a reader of primarily historical romance, mystery and fiction, this was a different choice for me. But what a story! The name of the ship, Endurance, aptly describes what these men embodied. Such courage and determination!

Enjoyed the book about her parents much more. Tedious at times. Strong Christian elements. I do enjoy Noah Wall's narration though.

Perhaps I would have enjoyed reading rather than listening. I do appreciate all I learned, disturbing though it was. Should be required reading for those who do not fear Nazi influence today.

Historia
A Bow Street Runner summons Captain Gabriel Lacey to a Berkeley Square ballroom where a young dandy was stabbed to death during a society ball. The prime suspect: Lacey's former commander, Colonel Brandon. Instead of denying the charges, Colonel Brandon allows himself to be arrested and claims, to Lacey's shock, that the lady he'd stayed protectively near at the ball is his mistress. Lacey realizes that he is the only person not convinced of Brandon's guilt - all present, including Brandon's wife, believe that Brandon committed the murder.

Another great addition to the Captain Lacey series
Revisado: 11-25-20
So glad I tried this series...I love it. I think James Gillies does a fantastic job and I hope he continues to narrate the whole series. I still enjoy reading but I have come to appreciate what a great narrator can add to the experience as I believe is the case here. I like that Gabriel is in his early 40s, has some aches and pains from his war injury, and is basically just a good guy. I gather that he is quite handsome as well but since this is told in first person POV, you never hear Gabriel saying so. But by this 6th or 7th book, it is becoming obvious that others think so. For me, I enjoy the characters I have come to know (especially Gabriel), the historical setting and the mysteries to be solved in this entire series.
