Man, the writers sure know how to keep you guessing! First he spends years pointing out Bastards through history, and and then he spends four episodes to say "Might not even be a bastard" about the guy running a secret CIA sex cult? Just because "there's not any real evidence" and "cops like to lie?"

Really keeps you on your toes this guy, we'll catch you in the act yet!

And yet, I'm halfway through the first novel and still not sure if this is supposed to be a male focused romance series or not. I don't see it in the tags, but this just doesn't make any sense otherwise.

Like, Jesus Christ, this is the first time I've read something and been like "Ooooh this is the Male Gaze! Yeah, this is obnoxious."

Turn it the hell down, damn, we get it, everyone's hot and horny for personal gain.

The author must have some talent in there, because when I'm not cringing it's pretty entertaining. Or maybe it's just the narrators knocking it out the park?

I did really appreciate them actually using two narrators for a series with so much female dialogue.

Edit: Okay, this is definitely a romance series, which certainly explains the rampant horniness, and it's weird that Audible apparently doesn't have a tag for that. I suppose they think men won't buy it if it says "romance" on it.

These would-be rationalists writing their wannabe self inserts would be a lot more interesting to read if they bothered to actually learn game theory or had heard of even the basic premises of enlightened self interest, but mostly they just monologue about what a cruel, cruel world it is for their characters just trying to survive with infinite resources, oodles of plot armor, and a whole cast of helpful characters the MC will offer zero reciprocity towards with no discernable internal conflict.

This makes them badass and not pathetic. Be impressed, gamers, don't you wish you could be that cool?!?!?

Just to give you an idea of the level of idiot self centeredness you'll be dealing with, after OP MC Jerkface gets Isekai'd he kills a mob that gives him five levels instantly (because he's so badass), then he has to be argued into going to kill more of these walking bags of free power that don't threaten him at all, all while bitching about how you can only count on yourself and don't be be a hero and such.

He's literally too stupid to seek out a free advantage, in terms of both power and potential knowledge, just because it has an *appearance* of altruism.

That rant over, if you're an edgy depressed gamer teen who malds over the world not recognizing their obvious sigma-maleness looking for a decently well written power fantasy with a genuinely well delivered narration, look no further. I'm genuinely disappointed the MC is so obnoxiously self righteous about his myopic viewpoint because this series had a lot of potential.

And who knows, maybe the author is actually competent and it's part one of a character redemption arc, but it's a LitRPG so that's an unlikely gamble.

And the audiobook doesn't even have the art that made the series stand out originally.

An incredibly informative podcast that is nonetheless relentlessly disheartening because the monsters are real people who mostly never got shot in the face by the heroes of the story because God doesn't care about justice.

The novel is better written than most LitRPGs, yet I find it hard to relate to a billionaire giant teenager that speaks like a thirty year old as he struggles to just play a video game all day.

Woe is he, he must play as his definitely balanced because the author says so character, running around as a special snowflake superhero that one-shots "elite" players with zero issue.

Don't worry, even though the MC is a billionaire, the game isn't pay to win, he can just buy concrete advantages with absurd amounts of money as his otherwise life threatening IRL disorder is solved for him.

I have to assume the author injects some actual conflict into the story in the next nine novels, but if you want an entertaining fantasy adventure I'd highly suggest you head over to their other series, Battle Mage Farmer, for your first introduction to their works, he certainly seems to have learned a lesson or two from his experience with this series.

That all said, the characters are likable enough in their own rights. If you want the LitRPG equivalent experience of watching a chill Let's Play of someone playing an RPG on easy mode for ten novels, this might be for you.

The title says it all, really. An idiotic, pointlessly referential asshole of an MC tortures you by not dying in every scene, written by a loser trying to take credit for creating a genre he most definitely did not.

Narration was great though, really made you despise the "hero."

My opinion on the dialogue might have to something to do with the author and his self insert repeatedly paraphrasing Mussolini and Giovanni Gentile in his setting designed to empower, enable, and excuse warlords.

Narrator's pretty great when he's not doing a "Vietnamese" accent.

Plus, most damningly of all imo, I don't believe the System economics, but if you're looking for a Dynasty Warriors-esque LitRPG where the MC frequently muses on Might Making Right while slaughtering literal hundreds of thousands of faceless enemies he makes sure to frequently call "foreigners" this might be for you.

Pros: Pretty fun progression power fantasy continues.
Cons: Continued casual endorsement of might makes right genocide.

I look forward to the day the author figures out his MC can have an actual argument with his "friend." Man even had a perfect excuse to introduce some conflict at the end, walked right up to it with the MC's new profession preceding a flashback to a massacre, then said "Not today, character development!"

Maybe next time.
