A Great Resource for All Creatives

From the author of Eat, Pray, Love comes a book for creatives that asks us to "embrace our curiosity and let go of needless suffering."

Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert, narrated by the author, is a compelling masterpiece encouraging all creative people to dive right into their craft--no matter what it is--and face our fears. She provides such amazing insight that the reader can't help but nod their head in agreement when they see themselves as the "martyr" instead of the "trickster." But, as Gilbert points out, we don't need to stay there. We can embrace the traits of a "trickster" and propel ourselves forward to a happier and more fulfilling creative life.

This book came to me as a recommendation during a workshop about mindset. While I had heard of Eat, Pray, Love, I had never read it, or anything else by Gilbert. Now, I want to read everything she has ever written. She is the perfect narrator for this book, and I feel like I got to know her better simply by listening. It didn't even seem like this book was 5 hours and 6 minutes long. I'm ready to read it again.

If you are struggling with your creativity, looking to move beyond fear, seeking to be more curious in your creative life, or simply trying to move yourself out of a rut, Big Magic is a great resource!

Great Tool for Your Personal Growth Toolbox

This has been a year of personal growth and professional development. If you are interested in resources for such topics, then you should grab a copy of The 6 Habits of Growth by Brendon Burchard.

In this audiobook, narrated by the author, Burchard outlines six habits to help you create the life of your dreams:

Motivation
Focus
Confidence
Energy
Purpose
Leadership
In his conversational style, he digs deep into each habit, offering insight and experience. While there is not a lot that is new or groundbreaking in The 6 Habits of Growth, Burchard is encouraging and inspiring in his delivery.

The topic that most spoke to me is the habit of Focus. The author encourages readers to assess where they are in ten main areas of life: mental health, physical health, family, friends, finances, mission, spirit, adventure, learning, and growth. This allows you to focus on who you "could be." This chapter talks about how to plan for greater performance; encourages you to make time to attend to your physical health; and journal so you can reflect.

There is some pitching of Burchard's self-improvement app that is subscription based, but if you read enough of these books, you come to expect it. At least it's not heavy handed.

The 6 Habits of Growth is a helpful tool for your personal growth and professional development tool box.

This audiobook is an interview with Dan Strutzel guiding the conversation on topics that Proctor has spoken about for decades. This conversational style provides helpful insight into Proctor's philosophy, but it isn't a step-by-step guide. Proctor shares the reality we sometimes forget: the only thing in the universe we can change is ourselves. So we have to adapt, and changing our mindset can be hard. But, we are more than the challenges and obstacles we face, so as we adapt, we can change our lives.

Change Your Paradigm, Change Your Life explores numerous concepts, which Proctor is able to dive deeper into thanks to the conversation with Strutzel. There is also a helpful contribution by Proctor's business partner, Sandy Gallagher.

I will be reading more books by Bob Proctor in the future. His philosophy truly resonated with me.

In this classic, bestselling personal development book, Hill shares his steps to riches, also widely known as his Principles of Personal Achievement. Using real life examples like Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, and Edward C. Barnes, Hill shares the importance of setting a goal and using autosuggestion to influence your mind, along with ways to put your desires into action. Hill discusses the importance of removing negative thoughts, avoiding evil, and how to outwit fear.

Having read the Original Classic Edition, I certainly want to take out the paperback version that I own and read the updated one, using it alongside the workbook I have. Hill's philosophy was revolutionary at the time and inspired a variety of future life and business coaches in one way or another.

If you are looking to embrace how positive thinking, goal setting, and the application of Hill's Principles of Personal Achievement can work in your life, start by reading Think and Grow Rich.

Teaches You How to Embrace Biblical Forgiveness

Using examples from her own life, Terkeurst teaches you how to move on, free yourself from past hurts, discover what the Bible says about forgiveness, and bring you to a place where you can create the beautiful life you seek.

While I almost abandoned this audiobook because the author's imploring voice bothered me, I'm glad I stuck with it because Terkeurst shared so many relatable moments and such good advice that I would have missed otherwise. When an author relays a story and you can nod your head in agreement, knowing you have felt the same way too, then you know they understand your pain. Maybe the best part is hearing that the author isn't saying everything will be perfect after you understand the true meaning of forgiveness as discussed in the Bible, because she still missteps, too. It's called being human. What this book helps the reader to understand is that they are more in control when they embrace this level of forgiveness.

Forgiving What You Can't Forget is the kind of book I will need to purchase in print and go through more slowly to take advantage of all it offers. Highly recommended!

This was my first time reading The Secret Garden, and I am ready to read it all over again. It is a story where the characters have such tragic beginnings, but this engaging and masterfully told story will leave every reader touched by its satisfying and delightful conclusion. Just like flowers in the garden, Mary and Colin blossom into new people. The Secret Garden is a story about resilience, faith, spirit, and magic.

In Good Leaders Ask Great Questions, John Maxwell, a top authority on leadership, discusses how being a person who asks questions changed and challenged him, and how you can use questions to propel you and your team forward.

With Maxwell's friendly and conversational style, he shares not only the questions that have changed his life; he invited people around the world to ask him any leadership question, answering 70 of them in this engaging resource. Maxwell shares his experiences and discusses the importance of influence. Having spent decades growing leaders, he has broken down Good Leaders Ask Great Questions into two parts: Questions I Ask and Questions Leaders Ask Me.

Maxwell's value-based leadership strikes a chord with me. The book got better and better as I went along. As I listened, I was able to identify the steps and missteps of my own leadership journey. The book inspired introspection and a desire to create a plan for the future. I will be grabbing a paperback copy so that I can mark it up and refer back to Good Leaders As Great Questions often.
