Historia
A woman describes a series of encounters she has with various people in the ordinary course of her life: an ex she runs into by chance at a public forum, an Airbnb owner unsure how to interact with her guests, a stranger who seeks help comforting his elderly mother, a friend of her youth now hospitalized with terminal cancer. In each of these people, the woman finds a common need: the urge to talk about themselves and to have an audience to their experiences.

Awful narration
Revisado: 03-23-25
The narrator overacts,"performing" as if the protagonist is a knowing, world-weary character from chick lit. No lightness, no bemused, wry understatement, intelligence, irony, melancholy--the true notes of the novel. Huber, like many American audio actors narrating novels by women, is simply not literary enough to take on a literary novel. She lacks even the vocabulary. I dropped out when she read the word "affectation," as "affection."

Historia
By turns somber and funny but above all provocative, Elizabeth Benedict’s Rewriting Illness: A View of My Own is a most unconventional memoir. With wisdom, self-effacing wit, and the storytelling skills of a seasoned novelist, she brings to life her cancer diagnosis and committed hypochondria.

Wise, often humorous memoir of illness
Revisado: 03-01-24
I loved this funny, modest, probing account of a novelist's bout with cancer, from the moment she finds a lump in her armpit, to the end of medical treatment. Composed of short essayistic segments with wry titles (e.g. "What I Wanted to Say to the Doctor" "My Own Private Hypochondria" "I Got Sick and Then I Got Better"), it's also about her joyful second marriage, family, work, and response to Susan Sontag's "Illness as Metaphor." Despite the subject matter, it's never depressing or egocentric. Benedict comes across as someone with the wisdom and honesty you'd want in a friend.

Historia
George Eliot's first full-length novel Adam Bede is a profound rendering of 19th century English pastoral life. This timeless story of seduction and betrayal follows the virtuous carpenter Adam Bede, whose world is soon disrupted when the all-too-beautiful Hetty betrays him for another villager. Her actions precipitate a turmoil of tragic events that shake the very foundations of their serene rural community.

Ghastly distortion of one character's voice
Revisado: 04-11-22
I've just started, and while the main narration is good, there's an unlistenable distortion in her performance of "Wiry Ben," to the point that if Wiry Ben returns in the next chapters, I may have to leave off listening.
It's as if the recording in his dialogue has been sped up to Alvin and the Chipmunks speed, though without any of their charm.
Did a producer do this deliberately? It sounds like a vandalization.

Historia
Are we deranged? The acclaimed Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh argues that future generations may well think so. How else to explain our imaginative failure in the face of global warming? In his first major book of nonfiction since In an Antique Land, Ghosh examines our inability - at the level of literature, history, and politics - to grasp the scale and violence of climate change.

Wonderful book & narrator is the best
Revisado: 02-02-20
This is a brilliant book, and I like the narrator's delivery so much that i'm looking for another book narrated by him.
