There were stories in this collection that started quietly and turned into surprisingly moving pieces. Really enjoyed this one.

Beautiful exploration of grief
Revisado: 10-10-21
This book explores the impact of grief and the transformative power of love among teenagers in a Texas town. Gorgeously written, and with a cast of characters I loved and empathized with throughout. A book filled with honesty and hopefulness. Highly recommend.

Important and Timely
Revisado: 04-30-21
There were a lot of us white women lining up to talk about anti-racism in 2019 and 2020. This book encourages us all to do a lot less finger wagging and intellectualizing and a lot more self reflection and behavioral modification. I read this as part of a group with other women invested in undoing racism in their personal lives and it was especially helpful to be able to talk with others about it after each chapter and push myself to be accountable and honest. I'll definitely need to read it at least once a year.

Such a fun listen!
Revisado: 04-30-21
This was a fun listen, with good dramatic elements and a satisfying ending. I thought some portions of the plot were predictable, in a kind of soap opera entertaining kind of way, and would recommend it as a beach/vacation read.

Historia
Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.

Very enjoyable
Revisado: 12-19-20
The story took some time to gain traction, with a lot of descriptions of rooms and things at the beginning, but was deeply engaging once the trouble began. It included well-written considerations of race without making that the focal point of the book. The ending was particularly lovely, with a moving final sentence.

Captivating, Inventive
Revisado: 09-22-20
Although I was an English major who went on to study fiction writing, I’ve hated reading these last few years. This book was recommended by a friend—and I can’t say enough good things about it. It’s fresh and interesting and does a beautiful job of using inventive approaches with purpose. I loved it! First time in YEARS that I’ve been swept away by a book.
