Historia
Like most of us, Toni Lodge tells little white lies all the time. Whether it's "I'm five minutes away" or "It must have gone to my spam folder", most of these innocent fibs are harmless. But what if you realised that you weren't just lying about the little things, but the big "life" stuff too? When Toni sat down to write this memoir, she realized that the lies she was telling herself were hiding some pretty important home truths—about her work, her identity and her mental health. In her dogged pursuit of these truths, she brazenly explores everything.

Revisado: 03-10-24
Just loved it. I love Toni & find her to be so real, relatable & hilarious. When listening I thought - yup, we could be best friends but then she talked about how important it is for her that people are on time and I thought dang... Real close though!
I love the relationship she had with her mom. She's right, grief is f**ked. It's a great reminder to not take that relationship for granted. I hope one day my kids look back with the love & fondness of memories of our lives that Toni does with her family.

Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders?

Historia
In this timely and provocative book, Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic asks two powerful questions: Why is it so easy for incompetent men to become leaders? And why is it so hard for competent people - especially competent women - to advance? Marshaling decades of rigorous research, Chamorro-Premuzic points out that although men make up a majority of leaders, they underperform when compared with female leaders. In fact, most organizations equate leadership potential with a handful of destructive personality traits, like overconfidence and narcissism.

All the reasons you expect. I like that there were suggestions to fix the issues but the author also noted that most of the leaders that need the suggestions, are uninterested in hearing them.

But it will also share the story of a man who refused to stay quiet when he learned that some of the men and women he had risked his life protecting, who knew him by name, would deny the horrors they faced.

3.5.
In full disclosure, I absolutely LOVE Harry Dunn. I fully admire him not only as a Capitol Officer but as a father and a human being.
That said, while I loved getting a little bit of a dive into his life & the aftermath of the J6 attack - reading what he's dealing with & how he's healing, I would have liked to read more insider details about the event as it unfolded. The book could have been longer & pieced together better. I think that's on his editor, not on the author.
I think he's got a lot to say & I, for one want to hear it. I think Mr Dunn is a force in this world. I believe he is doing and will continue to do big things and I cannot wait to see it all.

Historia
In December 2000, the Baltimore Sun ran a small piece about Wes Moore, a local student who had just received a Rhodes Scholarship. The same paper also ran a series of articles about four young men who had allegedly killed a police officer in a spectacularly botched armed robbery. The police were still hunting for two of the suspects who had gone on the lam, a pair of brothers. One was named Wes Moore.

As it turns out, we’re searching for external solutions to an internal problem. We won’t find what we’re searching for in punishing diets, productivity apps, or the latest self-improvement schemes. Yet all is not lost - we just need to learn how to take time for ourselves, without agenda or profit, and redefine what is truly worthwhile.

A must read
Revisado: 03-30-23
As someone who is fairly good with boundaries but one that struggles with them in very specific areas of my life I found this book extremely helpful. the scripts were wonderful for talking through issues from your children to in-laws to spouses to friends. Most issues are covered here & I was able to recognize myself in situations that I didn't even realize I was having as boundary breaking. I have already recommended this to several friends.

Historia
In football-obsessed Steubenville, Ohio, on a summer night in 2012, an incapacitated sixteen-year-old girl was repeatedly assaulted by members of the “Big Red” high school football team. They took turns documenting the crime and sharing on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Filmmaker Nancy Schwartzman spent four years embedded in the town, documenting the case and its reverberations. Ten years after the assault, Roll Red Roll is the culmination of that research, weaving in new interviews and personal reflections to take listeners beyond Steubenville to examine rape culture.

Couldn't stop reading
Revisado: 03-17-23
The story behind the story was fascinating, disturbing & disgusting but not all together shocking. The way that athletes, especially star athletes in a small town, are protected in our society over everything is honestly heartbreaking. To know what that girl went through & to have so few adults in her corner in that community protect her is a statement on how women are viewed in our country. the entitlement those boys felt to not only her body but her privacy afterwards & then knowing so many were there and no one stood up to do the right thing - not just as a parent but as a human, makes my blood boil.
