Historia
1939. Ansel Luxford has everything a person could want—a comfortable career, a brilliant spouse, a beautiful new baby. But he is obsessed by a belief that Europe is on the precipice of a war that will grow to consume the world. The United States is officially proclaiming neutrality in any foreign conflict, but when Ansel is offered an opportunity to move to Washington, D.C., to join a clandestine project within the Treasury Department that is working to undermine Nazi Germany, he uproots his family overnight and takes on the challenge of a lifetime.

Excellent Historical Fiction!
Revisado: 05-28-24
I was honestly surprised by how much I loved this true story of a small, secret group within the US Treasury department who tried to stop Hitler by crashing the German economy. The book starts slowly, but once it gets going, the pacing really picks up and it becomes hard to put down. The author does a great job of introducing economic concepts in a way that is easy to understand. This was a different perspective on WWII than anything I've ever read before and I think that is part of the reason I enjoyed it so much. The history is fascinating and the author takes great pains to be as accurate as possible. I listened while on a long car ride with my older parents and all three of us got hooked. The narrator was terrific.

Historia
The murder of brutal landowner Fyodor Karamazov changes the lives of his sons irrevocably: Mitya, the sensualist, whose bitter rivalry with his father immediately places him under suspicion for parricide; Ivan, the intellectual, driven to breakdown; the spiritual Alyosha, who tries to heal the family's rifts; and the shadowy figure of their bastard half-brother, Smerdyakov. Dostoyevsky's dark masterwork evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur and everyone's faith in humanity is tested.

Wonderful Narration
Revisado: 05-14-23
As many have mentioned, the narrator is wonderful! This book lends itself very well to being read out loud and Luke Thompson takes it to an entirely new level.

Historia
One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England's finest novelists. Now, it's home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen's legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen's home and her legacy. These people - a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others - could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

I Didn't Think I'd Like Tom Clancy
Revisado: 09-16-18
Years ago, I got it into my head that I didn't like Tom Clancy. After watching and enjoying the new Jack Ryan series on Amazon, I decided to give him a shot. I thought Patriot Games was terrific - lots of action and interesting characters. I will definitely listen to more of Clancy's books, especially if they are narrated by Scott Brick.

A Wonderful Surprise
Revisado: 08-06-18
I listened to this book after a friend recommended the print version. The story sounded intriguing so I thought I'd give it a try, but, honestly, my expectations weren't really that high. I knew almost immediately, however, that this book was everything she said and so much more! First, the three narrators themselves were top-notch. Each gave life and breath to their character. Hearing the story from three perspectives enabled the listener to hear an event once from one character and then get a totally different perspective from another character. As a reader, I thought I had an understanding of the story, and then all of a sudden my understanding was completely upended.
The story itself was very intriguing - women boxing at the beginning of the 18th century. However, this book is so much more than a book about boxing, so don't let that stop you if boxing turns you off. This is a book about female empowerment in a society where women had very few options. I'd highly recommend this book!
