Black hair??
Revisado: 02-23-25
Whoever wrote this must never have read the previous books, Smoke did NOT have black hair. No mention of the children living in Europe or with Sally's parents. The little cabin turned into a two story house. Story a bit drawn out, a bit more unbelievable than normal.

A little predictable
Revisado: 12-13-24
I did like the story line, but found that most of the twists and turns were what I expected…and some of what didn’t happen was very frustrating.
I don’t think Walt Longmire’s answer to most discussions and accusations are what regular people would say. Very frustrating for me to read his lack of answers…it is like he swallows his words when if he was frank he could actually straighten out situations before they could be worse. I guess that is the writer trying to extend the story and lengthen it with suspense.
Another thing that seemed to have happened from the first books to the later ones is he gets dumber about life in general. He says “what?” So much so I it makes you wonder if he ever retained life’s lessons. It’s like he is really dense.
Lastly, there are things, like in a later book, where there are contradictions. Not knowing where Fort Pratt is in a previous book, and then earlier in life mentioning it as if he had been there. Also, having Martha as a long time girlfriend from high school and then finding out he had a 4 year girlfriend in college. If you take each book as separate and not contiguous it doesn’t matter.

Slow to start, but enjoyed it as it developed
Revisado: 07-20-24
The first in the series. Each following book became crisper and the characters more defined. The last two books I listened to, Embroidered Truths and Crewel Yule, appear to be written by someone else. I honestly did not enjoy either one as the characters personalities change in each, becoming meaner, more scattered, not as organized. Part of it could be the change in the narrator who seemed to make Betsy ditzy. So far the series as a whole is interesting and fun. I hope the rest of the books are back to the original flavors.

Lackluster
Revisado: 06-19-24
I think I would have liked the story better if the narrator would have used her reading voice instead of the acting voice. If she could have read the lines with the authenticity she read the closing credits or other areas in the story. I think I have been spoiled by Susan Boyce. I do understand the narrator must choose different voice techniques and I am never going to be able to do it, but I prefer less of a caricature that a subtle voice change. Seems it makes it harder to read the lines so it feels disjointed to me. I am sure others loved it.

I am not sure if it was the narrative or the story, but it felt like someone else wrote the story instead of Lynn Cahoon. Plus the story didn’t flow and was more syrupy than normal.

No one knows Margo’s real name. Her colleagues and patrons at a small-town public library only know her middle-aged normalcy, congeniality, and charm. They have no reason to suspect that she is, in fact, a former nurse with a trail of countless premature deaths in her wake. She has turned a new page, so to speak, and the library is her sanctuary, a place to quell old urges.

Virgil and Lucas together again!
Revisado: 02-03-24
I gave the performance minus one star only because I didn’t like the Virgil voice. For some reason it just sounded girly or something. It took me a while to get used to the narrator as have been so used to the other two that narrated most of these books. I skipped around so he may have narrated more. He was pretty good with the female voices which is better than a lot of other narrators.
I think I love the ending on this book, the best of any so far, more than the whole book! I found some of the hysterics to be a little over the top. Or should I say histrionics? I always enjoy the Lucas and Virgil banter but something seemed different in this book. Almost like written by someone else. Just my imagination I am sure.

Doesn’t seem to be the work of Elkins
Revisado: 01-27-24
The story felt like it was hard to wrote as if he was forced to wrote the last one to fulfill his contract. I loved the narrator on all the previous books. He got better with voices each book. This gentleman was okay if it had been the first time I heard the voices of the characters, but for the women. He needs a lot of work! Sounded just exactly like a man trying to sound like a woman. Having belatedly read the other reviews I agree with those who purchased and returned the books. I, unfortunately, missed the deadline so am stuck with it. I also researched some of the i fo on the history of the Channel Islands and for the first time the book appears not to report it quite correctly as in all other books. Honestly seems someone not familiar with his books took poetic license in ghost writing this book as even Gideons age is way off. Don’t waste your credit!

I loved this second in the series. I loved the first one, too. I found myself smiling when Daisy smiled and crying with all the characters! It was like living as part of the book….a ghost in the background watching and encouraging everyone behind the scenes. I can’t wait to get more of her books!

Historia
Daisy McCrae's life is in tatters. She's lost her job, broken up with her boyfriend, and has been reduced to living in the attic above her family's store, the Union Street Bakery, while learning the business. Making things worse is the constant feeling of not being a "real" McCrae, since she was adopted as a child and has a less-than-perfect relationship with her two sisters. Then a long-standing elderly customer passes away, and for some reason she bequeaths to Daisy a journal dating back to the 1850s...

Such an interesting and enjoyable book! A MUST read!!!
Revisado: 11-12-23
Loved the narrator. Generally not fond of women narrators, but her lilting voice with a deeper sound, and changes for all characters made it more fun and enjoyable.
The book certainly brings the reality of our nasty historical past to life without making the reader feel soiled and broken. That happens to me when I read books like “Roots” and others. It amazes me to this day how some in our nation still carry old beliefs and anger over something their own ancestors caused…..not the other way around.
If you are a listener, be sure to hear the epilogue.
