What a joy to have Ann Patchetts work read by Meryl Streep. Sometimes I forgot it was she who was reading - she’s that good. Lovely.

1926, and in a country still recovering from the Great War, London has become the focus for a delirious new nightlife. In the clubs of Soho, peers of the realm rub shoulders with starlets, foreign dignitaries with gangsters and girls sell dances for a shilling a time. The notorious queen of this glittering world is Nellie Coker, ruthless but also ambitious to advance her six children, including the enigmatic eldest, Niven whose character has been forged in the crucible of the Somme. But success breeds enemies and Nellie's empire faces threats from without and within.

Kate Atkinson on top form as usual
Revisado: 12-16-22
Ever since her debut, Kate Atkinson has been one of my favourite authors. This is as good as the masterpiece, Behind-the-scenes at the Museum.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It is a most engaging and moving piece of work.
Gwendolyn Kelling is a wonderful creation as is Nelly Coker.

Historia
Tom Segura is known for his twisted takes and irreverent comedic voice. But after a few years of crazy tours and churning out podcasts weekly, all while parenting two young children, he desperately needs a second to himself. It’s not that he hates his friends and family — he’s not a monster — he’s just beat, which is why his son’s (ruthless) first full sentence, “I’d like to play alone, please,” has since become his mantra.

Helpless with laughter
Revisado: 08-06-22
I lay awake night after night listening to this book, weak with giggles. And occasionally a tear. Tom Segura is just a brilliant comic mind. His off-centre view of the world is penetrating as well as extremely funny. The chapter on his father is so hilarious (I’ve made several people listen to it) and then it takes this beautiful turn… when he describes how wholeheartedly affectionate his father is, even before the devastating ending.
I appreciated his description of how he built his career and the sincere encouragement he gives in this book.
It made me like and admire him even more.

Historia
Mattie is a woman with a thrilling past and a chafingly uneventful present. During the Women’s Suffrage Campaign she was a militant. Jailed five times, she marched, sang, gave speeches, smashed windows and heckled Winston Churchill, and nothing - nothing - since then has had the same depth, the same excitement. Now in middle age, she is still looking for a fresh mould into which to pour her energies.

Evocative, engaging, original. I was totally immersed in the world of the story from the start. An epic tale of the turning points in everyday lives. I can’t remember the last time I was so enamoured of a story and spellbound by the writing.

Made me wish I had read a real life account of this story.
Revisado: 06-01-22
The historical story was gripping. It was a pity that it was alternated with an up-to-date story. The contemporary chapters were a complete waste of time. A predictable story with an unlikable central character who learns nothing about her privilege. A boring love story that is Telegraph turn my alarm off.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

I’m on a trip into the Greeks started by Pat Barker’s Silence of The Girls. I didn’t think I could love anything as much as that but I was just enthralled by this. The authors generous imagination is complemented by the performance. I loved the actor’s unobtrusive way of distinguishing between characters. Wept more than once which is what I want from a good story.

Historia
Troy has fallen. The Greeks have won their bitter war. They can return home victors, loaded with their spoils: their stolen gold, stolen weapons, stolen women. All they need is a good wind to lift their sails. But the wind does not come. The gods have been offended - the body of Priam lies desecrated, unburied - and so the victors remain in limbo, camped in the shadow of the city they destroyed, pacing at the edge of an unobliging sea.

Historia
Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives in southern Appalachia. At the heart of these intertwined narratives is a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches them from an isolated mountain cabin where she is caught off-guard by Eddie Bondo, a young hunter who comes to invade her most private spaces and her solitary life.

A slow start but so deeply worth leaning into.
Revisado: 12-12-21
I wasn’t gripped right away. I think this may be because for me, Barbara Kingsolvers writing is better enjoyed on the page. Still it’s a good trade to have her read it herself - to know that the inflections are exactly what she intended. Despite the slow start by the middle I was completely engaged and I both wept openly and shouted with laughter several times before the end. There’s something profound and profoundly moving about her writing. I loved where she ended, too because we could see some of the future. Just wonderful.
