This is one of the better works I've found so far that leverages scientific research on happiness to create a prescription for its pursuit. This did not come off as a gimmick or the work of a charlatan. It's just science explained to the layperson.

This is an excellent survey that deals with the subject on its own terms. The author is concerned with power structures, but those concerns do not overwhelm the exposition to the exclusion of core content. She also sprinkles a variety of film recommendations throughout for further investigation. Part of me wishes the class were longer; but the pace and level were great for engaging without getting lost in the weeds.

This volume does not achieve the same as the first three, but it is a pleasant read nonetheless.

Humor with clear and concise explanations make this guy's teaching easy to follow and absorb. And, for a bad reader like myself who likes to multitask, the audio format is invaluable.

Author covers the concepts---not just question answers---and weaves stories, insights, and delightful fun facts into the class. Got me my license in less than 2 weeks after I'd been flirting with it off and on for two years. Stupendous job!

I and my partner have different sleep schedules and needs, which causes small but real tension. Only thanks to this book did it occur to me that this was an addressable issue. Definitely worth a read.

The Naked Truth of Politics in a Work of Fiction

Revisado: 01-12-21

I am not normally a lover of fiction, but this volume breathes beautiful life into the group fissures that drive today's politics in the US. Because it draws on and was written in another time, it allows us to drop our programmed partisan responses and to see with fresh eyes the issues of race and class. While today's media organization inevitably present their teammates as saints, Wolfe exposes the dirty underbelly of all involved. The elite? Sleeping around and privileged with access to high-priced lawyers. High-priced lawyers? Able to pull strings not available to all. Elected district attorneys and judges? Bend to political pressure or face being thrown out---regardless of the facts of the case. The general public? Out for blood in politicized cases, and happy to maul any victim thrown their way. Never have I seen the naked truth told so purely in a work of fiction.

I don't typically listen to fiction, but I absolutely loved this book. If you're a fan of exploring the unknown and finding the unexpected, this book will grip you.

The performer was adept at using various voices to render different characters.

The one drawback is that the recording quality isn't the best, but it's good enough that you can make out what's going on. The original recording is likely on the older side, but the content is lovely.

The first and last chapters of this book are useless, but the middle is wonderful. The intro tries to hook you with a "you guys think differently" monologue that comes across like an evangelist seeking a convert; and the conclusion mixes a bunch of unsubstantiated and unconnected ethical theses in with a few plausible applications of systems thinking to life in general. If you want to learn the subject, this book will certainly help you. The middle is serious writing and presents the topic in an approachable fashion; but do yourself a favor and listen ONLY to the middle.

Best Short Philosophy Survey I Know

Revisado: 02-04-20

Having taken a number of philosophy classes in my time and discussed a litany of topics outside those classes, I have a decent exposure to the big philosophical ideas that are out there. Nevertheless, all that education left a few holes that this little volume was able to fill. Further, many philosophy classes fail to weave the various thinkers into a cohesive narrative. This book, by contrast, usually constructs that narrative conversation where appropriate. And the summaries, while short, are extremely helpful.

Finally, this book does a lovely job of familiarizing the reader with the famous thought experiments of philosophy: the axe murderer, the present king of France, and the like. These examples are central to practical philosophical discussion and understanding, but one can easily go through classes without exposure to them. And that lack of exposure inhibits one's ability to navigate a philosophical conversation happening before them.

To the author, bravo! I wish my intro to philosophy had been this clear.
