Historia
Pulitzer Prize, Biography, 2016. Barbarian Days is William Finnegan's memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life.

I really tried
Revisado: 10-05-24
Maybe it’s the narrator but this book was simply dull. Read by the author, I found it even more so because of his monotone, unnatural speech patterns. I mean, you WROTE the book, shouldn’t you be able to read it and know where the sentence ends? Often, he’d read a sentence and then awkwardly attach the last few words as though he forgot there was more to read. It was painful. I gave it 4 full chapters. I’m done.

When The Sandman, also known as Lord Morpheus - the immortal king of dreams, stories and the imagination - is pulled from his realm and imprisoned on Earth by a nefarious cult, he languishes for decades before finally escaping. Once free, he must retrieve the three “tools” that will restore his power and help him to rebuild his dominion, which has deteriorated in his absence.

A feast for the ears and imagination!!
Revisado: 08-07-20
No less spectacular than the novels themselves. This is SO much more than I expected - a full blown production of the stories from the Sandman series. Music, sound effects, actors, narration...there’s nothing missing! I imagine this is what it was like when people huddled around their radios and listened to War of the Worlds. I wondered how (if..?!) a graphic novel could survive this format but trust me, it thrives here thanks to Neil and his splendid production. I can not wait for the next installment!!!

Historia
The body of Polynices, Antigone's brother, has been ordered to remain unburied by Creon, the new king of Thebes. Antigone defies the law, sealing her fate. Originally produced in Paris during the Nazi occupation, Anouilh's Antigone was seen by the French as theatre resistance and by Germans as an affirmation of authority.

A new spin on this timeless tragedy
Revisado: 04-16-20
This was very different than I expected...in all the best ways. Basically it sounds like a recording of a live performance, and that works as a good listen here. But the dialog in this new "translation" is much more modern and really allowed me to relate to Antigone as a contemporary character for the first time. The self-destructive righteousness of her arguments hit home in new ways listening to this play, particularly in her final exchanges with King Creon. Definitely worth a listen if you're studying Greek tragedy and need to find a way to connect to the story - but it's also worth listening to if you want to gain a little insight into what people refer to as the millennial mindset.

Gaiman's words brought to life
Revisado: 04-16-20
The story follows the usual Gaiman unseen-world-behind-the-seen-world premise, which never gets old the way he tells it. don't consider this YA literature, but if I had children I would absolutely encourage them to read this book. No one tells a tale like Neil Gaiman, and the actors reading/performing this story take something that was already enjoyable and make it fantastic. You won't be returning this one...

Historia
John Lithgow has compiled an outstanding collection of memorable poems and has gathered his famous friends to read them. The wide variety of carefully selected poetry in this audiobook provides the perfect introduction to reel in those who are new to poetry, and for poetry lovers to experience beloved verses in a fresh, vivid way. Lithgow offers insightful and sometimes poignant commentary to accompany each poem. His essential criterion is that "each poem's light shines more brightly when read aloud".

This collection of poems was well chosen and John Lithgow was an absolute delight. I wish he'd do more audible books like these - I'd buy every one of them.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

If you like far-fetched YA novels this is for you.
Revisado: 12-28-19
If you can be swept away by a story where a girl grows up to be ravishingly beautiful despite living alone in a swamp since the age of 8 with no nutrition and no health care, and so brilliant that she writes multiple text books that revolutionize the study of ornithology despite never having any kind of formal education, then this is the book for you. Call me a literary snob, but I couldn't stop rolling my eyes and thinking, "Really...really??" The most interesting and believable character in this sappy mess is the swamp itself. No amount of clever narration could have saved this ridiculous story...

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Young Adult fiction at best....
Revisado: 05-21-19
I listened to the whole book. It's a light read (listen) and nothing really shocking happens. It seemed to me to be something I'd find in the young adult section of the bookstore, which isn't an area I typically frequent, I really wish authors would take an extra minute and consider the wisdom of narrating their own books - just because you can write the book doesn't mean you're necessarily the best person to read it - and in this case I think another reader would have made this average story a little bit better

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Nothing. Ever. Happens
Revisado: 05-21-19
I gave this book 6 hours, waiting for something - anything - to get going. I understand having to set the scene and introduce this completely new world, it's customs, people, etc... but for the love of god must that be so complicated and in-depth that the story itself never gets going?? I was really looking forward to this book and I couldn't be more disappointed. Maybe after 10 hours you start giving a damn about these characters whose names I can neither remember nor pronounce, but I doubt it. I was going to try and hang in there (based on all the fabulous reviews) a few more hours, but when I met the character who got his kicks by pulling off the legs of live crabs, I was d-o-n-e.
