Historia
The Anarchy tells the remarkable story of how one of the world’s most magnificent empires disintegrated and came to be replaced by a dangerously unregulated private company, based thousands of miles overseas in one small office, five windows wide, and answerable only to its distant shareholders. In his most ambitious and riveting audiobook to date, William Dalrymple tells the story of the East India Company as it has never been told before, unfolding a timely cautionary tale of the first global corporate power.

Impressive story, well detailed with facts
Revisado: 07-15-24
The author gives a wonderfully detailed account of the East India Company and manages to lay it out in a very coherent storyline. My only complaint is that sometimes his conclusions don’t entirely match with the facts he had just detailed.

Historia
Before America joined World War I, a small group of Americans volunteered for the French Foreign Legion to help defeat the Central Powers. Historian David Hanna profiles seven of these volunteers: a poet, an artist, a boxer, a stunt pilot, a college student, a veteran of the Spanish American War, and an advertising executive. All seven men were united in courage; and some, like poet Alan Seeger, paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Well research history book, story told in a very engaging manner. Fascinating how it described the passion of these men who dropped everything and went to fight in someone else’s war because they wanted to stand up against a bully. Their spiritual descendants are at work now in Ukraine.

Historia
In July 2011, the oil tanker Brillante Virtuoso was drifting through the treacherous Gulf of Aden when a crew of pirates attacked and set her ablaze in a devastating explosion. But when David Mockett, a maritime surveyor working for Lloyd’s of London, inspected the damaged vessel, he was left with more questions than answers. How had the pirates gotten aboard so easily? And if they wanted to steal the ship and bargain for its return, then why did they destroy it? The questions didn’t add up—and Mockett would never answer them.

Historia
King Louis Philippe II created the Foreign Legion in 1831 as a way to rid France of penniless immigrants and others considered a liability to the French establishment. The Foreign Legion still exists today as an elite army of modern mercenaries from around the world, in the service of la France. Considered a haven for the dregs of society, joining the Foreign Legion was rumored to be simple, but it wasn't.

A wonderful history
Revisado: 07-14-22
The book was well researched and insightful and did a good job covering the people who make up the important footnotes of history. It was entertaining and at times funny as well. A good addition to the book would be some of the recent DNA analysis of these ancient peoples, the Philistines in particular. Not including this is no fault of the author as it is very recent.

Historia
Russia is famous for its vodka, and its culture of extreme intoxication. But just as vodka is central to the lives of many Russians, it is also central to understanding Russian history and politics. In Vodka Politics, Mark Lawrence Schrad argues that debilitating societal alcoholism is not hard-wired into Russians' genetic code, but rather their autocratic political system, which has long wielded vodka as a tool of statecraft. Through a series of historical investigations stretching from Ivan the Terrible through Vladimir Putin, Vodka Politics presents the secret history of the Russian state itself.

A fascinating book
Revisado: 06-29-22
The book was full of good information and the author made a lot of good arguments. It was interesting to see Russian history from a different perspective. The narrator’s use of accents made the reading seem campy at times. One other issue with the narration is that “Tartar” (an Asian nomadic people) is pronounced “tar-tar,” not “tader,” as in a shortened way of saying “potato.”

War and Peace is at once an epic war chronicle and an exploration of everything that make us all human: love and hate, ambition and despair, life and death. Allow yourself to get lost in the lives of three Russian aristocratic families, whose triumphs and challenges are every bit as resonant to today’s listener as they were to original readers. Thandiwe Newton inhabits each character with such flair that it is easy to forget that you are listening to one voice.

A wonderful book and a decent reading
Revisado: 06-09-22
The book was wonderful. My only complaint is how all of the characters seemed like platonic ideals and lacked the complexities of real people. But I suppose Tolstoy couldn’t have made the points he did without that. Anyone who wishes to understand modern Russian propaganda should also listen.
Some reviews complained about the accents and voices used by the reader. I found it a little campy at first but I think it is necessary due to the large number of characters. It is a Russian novel after all…

Wonderful, but not what I was expecting
Revisado: 04-16-22
I was hoping for a general biography/ summary of Alexander’s campaigns. The book turned out to be an in depth look into the conflicts within Greece, Macedonia, and Persia, a look at Alexander the Great as a king, general and person (worts and all), and a exhaustive look at the historical scholarship. It is fascinating and should be read by everyone who is interested in the subject and has already read a lot. However it is not a good introductory book.

Disappointing
Revisado: 04-16-22
I had to turn it off out of frustration after the first 20 minutes. The brief history of classical Greece was just a string of the sort of historical half truth (but often false) clichés you find in any history channel documentary (Spartans were tough but dumb, Athenians were smart but weak). Perhaps the author meant the book for those without any classical education. Definitely not for someone who is looking for in depth analysis.

Historia
The British wars began on the morning of 23 July 1637, heralding 200 years of battles. Most were driven by religious or political conviction, as Republicans and Royalists, Catholics and Protestants, Tories and Whigs, and colonialists and natives vied for supremacy. Of the battles not fought on home territory, many took place across Europe, America, India, and also at sea. Schama's examination of this turbulent period reveals how the British people eventually united in imperial enterprise, forming 'Britannia Incorporated'.
