Historia
On an island in the Great Massasauga Swamp—an area known as “The Waters” to the residents of nearby Whiteheart, Michigan—herbalist and eccentric Hermine “Herself” Zook has healed the local women of their ailments for generations. As stubborn as her tonics are powerful, Herself inspires reverence and fear in the people of Whiteheart, and even in her own three estranged daughters. The youngest—the beautiful, inscrutable, and lazy Rose Thorn—has left her own daughter, eleven-year-old Dorothy “Donkey” Zook, to grow up wild.

the constant exposition was dragging and more than a bit smug
Revisado: 10-11-24
we don't need or in this case want three homey clicked 'observations' about human nature life nature destiny etc per page. in this case these 'inisghts' were constantly contradicting themselves....this author apparently never heard of show dont tell and decided to tell us every sophmoric bit of wanna be crone wisdom bent to the specific needs of all three plot movements....love Lilli but...she deserves so much better material. where the hell are the professional editors?

overly simplistic is this YA
Revisado: 09-09-24
the writing is basic and unrefined...passable not notable. the plot is done better hundreds of times elsewhere with richer depth of feeling and better social compelxity. characters are paper thin. is this self published? these should come with a warning...

aging narcicist gaslights adult child one more time before death
Revisado: 05-18-24
terrible. histrionic characters. transparent deux ex machinations. wealthy people woth no 'real' problems pretending fairly run of the mill 'tragedies' are actual 'grit' of real life. Hard hard eyerolls nearly sprained my eyes rolling so hard at the clumsiness. like going to a play and all the scenery is cardboard and the actors unprepared. main character's beliefs and ideals blow in the wind of narrative in EVERY direction. he changes his heart and mind so frequently and so diametrically he becomes a joke. physically gagging at the authors map of how all narccicistic abuse is magically annulled and forgiven if an aging narcicist has a 'good enough' historical trauma to blame their lifetime of selfishness and abominable behavior on. gross. totally bullsh**t. and the fact the so many readers see no issues with this narrative is frightening.

strong writing a bit too much deux ex machina...
Revisado: 01-23-24
well i liked it but got annoyed about 3/4 way thru. the glass onion style double triple quadruple machinations push plausibility much too far. i liked it better halfway thru than i do now that ive finished. an awful lot of rationalization and self-righteous smugness diminished the narratives wrap up.

great writing spoilt by burdensome plot
Revisado: 01-04-24
i wanted to like it but the time travel and the murder mystery clashed so hard against one another. one is supposed to HIDE the mechanics in wonderful art. we dont want the see the lines beneath the paint or the wires suspending Peter Pan in the theatre. we can suspend disbelief but its the artisits responsibility not to break it...the contrivance and convolutions that do not add to improve or enrich the story does break my willingness trust in this artist.

great premise get so softened..
Revisado: 11-26-23
loved the idea not so lovely in execution. yes to the nature parts about the bugs and bacteria...like understory or braiding sweetgrass. while the initial generational stories were strong the whole things fell apart and loosend and unravelled....became distracting, difficult to stay 'involved', rambling. lost track and the lost interest...ok writing but....does not hold together. does not hold attention.

a faux martha stewart world of name dropping
Revisado: 10-31-23
a bunch of elitist non problems manufactured into 2 dimensional drama meant to infer these birth lottery winners will experience personal evolution.
the literary equivalent of a glossy costal magazine trying to pass as journalism.
did i mention the elistist name dropping and descriptions of 'only rich people eat' foods, furniture, and excessive brand references of all types.
the writitng is solid what it depicts is pure absolute fluffernutter. just saw a book about how the ideas of classism and elitism are baked into culture through art and this is prime example. superflouously ŵealthy people are not inherently 'more interesting'. in this case.....far far less interesting than the quality of the writing deserves.
nearly sprained my eyes from rolling them so hard while annoyed stuck listening to this while driving long distance...

not a simple time twist novel...an unecssarily complex hard science nonsense i did not enjoy. the writing was solid. the story was absurd and unecessarily complex...there were solid enjoyable chapters...as when re-living his childhood. the rest was ennervating and distracting. much a vain exercise in theoretical science.
