Historia
Many consider the Battle of Midway to have turned the tide of the Pacific War. It is without question one of the most famous battles in history. Now, for the first time since Gordon W. Prange's best-selling Miracle at Midway, Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully offer a new interpretation of this great naval engagement. Shattered Sword makes extensive use of Japanese primary sources. It also corrects the many errors of Mitsuo Fuchida's Midway: The Battle That Doomed Japan It thus forces a major, potentially controversial reevaluation of the great battle.

Just what a historical book should be, especially since the author lived in Japan to conduct the necessary research.

Historia
In 1981, Jack Welch took over General Electric and quickly rose to fame as the first celebrity CEO. He golfed with presidents, mingled with movie stars, and was idolized for growing GE into the most valuable company in the world. But Welch’s achievements didn’t stem from some greater intelligence or business prowess. Rather, they were the result of a sustained effort to push GE’s stock price ever higher, often at the expense of workers, consumers, and innovation.

The other perspective that needs to be told
Revisado: 11-11-24
Overall, I thought the author did a good job building his case. Near the end, I began to wonder why he was slipping into Trump derangement syndrome. I don’t think that added much to the story other than to make me wonder what other agenda he was pushing that was not supported by the data he was quoting.
Being as that, I am writing this review after the 2024 election, it is somewhat ironic that the working class people the author is advocating for is led by Mr. Welches deal making friend. I am sure there will be more to this story in the coming years.

Historia
A magisterial history of Indigenous North America that places the power of Native nations at its center, telling their story from the rise of ancient cities more than a thousand years ago to fights for sovereignty that continue today. Long before the colonization of North America, Indigenous Americans built diverse civilizations and adapted to a changing world in ways that reverberated globally. And, as award-winning historian Kathleen DuVal vividly recounts, when Europeans did arrive, no civilization came to a halt because of a few wandering explorers, even when the strangers came well armed.

A bit too long
Revisado: 10-27-24
I understand that the topic of Indian history in the Americas is probably more than can be put into one book, However, I felt the author was repeating themselves many times and the content could have been condensed.
I appreciate the fact that the author covered the evolution of the legal system in its interaction with American Indians.
Kudos to the narrator for the pronunciation of many unfamiliar names and terms.

At War with Ourselves is the story of helping a disruptive President drive necessary shifts in U.S. foreign policy at a critical moment in history. McMaster entered an administration beset by conflict and the hyper partisanship of American politics. With the candor of a soldier and the perspective of a historian, McMaster rises above the fray to lay bare the good, the bad, and the ugly of Trump’s presidency and give listeners insight into what a second Trump term would look like.

It was helpful to get a relatively unbiased view of DJT without hints of derangement syndrome or sycophancy from the author.
I discounted other reviewers criticisms against HRM as someone trying to paint themselves in a positive light.
My only criticism is that HRM is a much better off the cuff speaker than a narrator. I listen frequently to many presentations from HRM, but found the book, missing some of the spark I’ve come to expect by listening to him.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Good Stories, but…
Revisado: 08-20-24
I fell into the buzz around how great this book was and got it as my credits were stacking up. It’s not hard to like M2, so what the heck, I figured this was no brainer.
To steal a theme, the first red light was the narration style was at times hard to follow. All of the inflections are over the top. While I get his “voice acting” was genuine (which is great), but it took me a while to pick up on some of the material as he was almost “rap talking” for some of his poems/musings. This is his style, fine, just hard for a Joe Schmoe like me to pick up on at times.
I appreciated his openness.
The other “red light” was that I’ve heard him chat in long form interviews, so I was hoping to get more of a deep dive into some topics, but to no avail. Just a story about his life, which was entertaining to a point…. Guess I just was expecting something more.
The last “red light” is sorta related to the second. It’s hard to make the final point without sounding jealous, but this goes back to this was a collection of stories and he was the main character…. It was hard to feel sorry for the guy that always got the girl(s), had the truck, took the magnificent road trip…. Etc, on and on. Yeah, there was some adversity sprinkled in from time to time. Understand he added “perspectives” and “green lights” to close the loop… But back to #2, I expected more

Blood Moon is the story of the century-long blood feud between two rival Cherokee chiefs from the early years of the United States through the infamous Trail of Tears and into the Civil War. While little remembered today, their mutual hatred shaped the tragic history of the tribe far more than anyone, even the reviled President Andrew Jackson, ever did.

Myth busting the Trail Of Tears
Revisado: 09-27-23
I’ve read the other reviews and comments pointing out bias of one party over the other. I don’t think that was the point. Point was that this is a much more nuanced event (Trail of Tears) and it needn’t have to happen “that way”.
The Ridge Party saw the writing on the wall, and took action accordingly. Ross is a good bit less than a “holier than thou” Moses of his people.
All in all a failure of government and leadership and what happens when people have blind loyalty to a party/person with the inability question authority.
As a longtime resident of East Tn, I appreciated the detailed geography of these events as I’ll pass by them with a bit more respect and reverence going forward.

Jon Meacham, in American Lion, has delivered the definitive human portrait of a pivotal president who forever changed the American presidency and America itself. Andrew Jackson, his intimate circle of friends, and his tumultuous times are at the heart of this remarkable book about the man who rose from nothing to create the modern presidency.

Now you know why he’s on the $20
Revisado: 05-06-23
While I always thought I paid attention in history class and read American history, this period was always a bit lacking as it didn’t have the thrill of the revolution nor the drama for the immediate lead up to the Civil War and its consequences.
It seems that everyone wants to bash Jackson for the Indian Removal, fair enough. But that simplifies things…. Any president in that same situation would have done the same. Had they not, the Union wouldn’t have existed much longer as the Indians would have been continually stirred up by English, Spanish, and perhaps even the French.

Picking up where his previous memoir leaves off, Sledge, a young marine in the First Division, traces his company's movements and charts his own difficult passage to peace following his horrific experiences in the Pacific. He reflects on his duty in the ancient city of Peiping (now Beijing) and recounts the difficulty of returning to his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, and resuming civilian life haunted by the shadows of close combat.

Audiobook afterthought
Revisado: 01-16-23
My review is similar to many other already expressed. Excellent story by Dr. Sledge. Disappointed in the narration.
Although I can grant some mistakes and nuances, I felt the overall performance focused too heavily on trying to replicate a southern accent or other ethnicities. I just don’t think this narrator could pull it off without it sounding just a bit hammy.
A great testament to the human spirit, and how an educated man can do terrible things, suffer a great deal and still return home and find peace eventually.

One of the great fears many of us face is that despite all our effort and striving, we will discover at the end that we have wasted our life. In A Guide to the Good Life, William B. Irvine plumbs the wisdom of Stoic philosophy, one of the most popular and successful schools of thought in ancient Rome, and shows how its insight and advice are still remarkably applicable to modern lives. In A Guide to the Good Life, Irvine offers a refreshing presentation of Stoicism, showing how this ancient philosophy can still direct us toward a better life.

A bit on the Academic side, but good advice for considering.
Revisado: 02-07-22
The beginning of the book was a little hard to follow at first. The names and places of the Roman stoics are lost on the modern mind. However I understand that the source material does need to be referenced.
Once I got through that challenging part , I enjoyed listening and found many parallels with other books that cover inner peace.
I felt the narration came up a little short. While it was calm and not annoying it was perhaps a little bit too calm.

For an entire generation, at home and abroad, the United States has waged an endless conflict known as the War on Terror. In addition to multiple ground wars, the era pioneered drone strikes and industrial-scale digital surveillance, weakened the rule of law through indefinite detentions, sanctioned torture, and manipulated the truth about it all. These conflicts have yielded neither peace nor victory, but they have transformed America. Today’s nativist resurgence walked through a door opened by the 9/11 era. And that door remains open.

Why a Partisan piece?
Revisado: 10-07-21
This could have been so much better but it was riddled so much with partisan snark, that I’m afraid the overall thesis is overlooked, which is too bad.
Perhaps they could have found someone other than the author to read it and the attitude may have been dialed down, but I doubt it.
Came as a recommendation from CSIS, who is usually non-partisan….. gonna have to re-think that.
I’m inclined to believe that we have out of control security state, but to blame it all on white fundamentalist christians is a simplistic argument that doesn’t take hours to make.
In all fairness, I had to just stop listening at two hours into it….. I’ve got better things to listen to that are more holistic and balanced
