Uh,uh,uh,um,um
Revisado: 04-14-22
I am a long time fan of the Great Courses. I appreciate the knowledge a learned professor brings to me. So I find it disheartening that the delivery of said knowledge can not be imparted because of a poor delivery style. I have always thought the fan fares and applause that are forced into breaks in the lectures as a ridiculous addition. Really, I must have been skipping classes those days in college when the trumpets and applause were happening. Now we are featuring lecturers who can't lecture. I thought I was mistaken in my perception until I read reviews from 2016 & 2017. Then I found reviewers who were equally distracted. Professor Harl speaks very quickly, then has to "um and uh" to fill in while his brain catches up. Great Courses, "eh" not so much.

Historia
It’s the spring of 1938 and no longer safe to be a Jew in Vienna. Nineteen-year-old Elise Landau is forced to leave her glittering life of parties and champagne to become a parlor maid in England. She arrives at Tyneford, the great house on the bay, where servants polish silver and serve drinks on the lawn. But war is coming, and the world is changing. When Kit, the son of Tyneford’s master, returns home, he and Elise strike up an unlikely friendship that will transform Tyneford - and Elise - forever. An irresistible World War II story of a forbidden romance in a great English country house.

Amazingly Boring.
Revisado: 04-10-22
I make every effort to complete a book so I may give it a fair revIew. This novel was too much of a struggle to fulfill that task. To ad insult, the narrator had a babyish voice I would not have used for reading to.my grandchildren. Even "included with membership" is an overcharge.

Long, ponderous & boring
Revisado: 02-07-22
Narrator one of the best, but a narrator can't salvage a sub par book. I have loved Leveque's stories for years....not this one.

One of my favorite LeVeque's
Revisado: 04-27-20
I have been an avid LeVeque reader for many years, this story is one of my favorites. Sadly, the narrator is not. Daniel Dorse has a voice which is not suited to portraying female characters. This book has a heavy female narrative, and Mr. Dorse's voicalization of women characters is grating. He does well with male characters and narrative, but the distraction of his females ruin the book.

Historia
Mixing a bit of seventeenth-century French history with a great deal of invention, Alexandre Dumas tells the tale of young D'Artagnan and his musketeer comrades, Porthos, Athos, and Aramis. Together they fight to foil the schemes of the brilliant, dangerous Cardinal Richelieu, who pretends to support the king while plotting to advance his own power. Bursting with swirling swordplay, swooning romance, and unforgettable figures.

Too Boring
Revisado: 06-27-19
After seeing every film based on The Three Musketeers, I thought I should explore the original story. I tried really hard to become engaged, I really did, it was impossible. If length equals good, this story achieved that goal! However, I was amazed at how boring most of the book is. I am disappointed I could not appreciate the story. I guess not all classics translate well into out modern life.

I felt at my age, 67, it was way past time to read not only a classic story; buy one authored by a fellow Hoosier. I was wrong.

Historia
The reign of King John means dark days for all of England. Not one man, woman, or child lived without fear. Magnifying this fear is the man they call The Lord of the Shadows - a terrifying figure who sits at the right hand of the King, manipulating the royal moves like a puppet master. The Lord of the Shadows has been known to tear men apart with his bare hands and can, with a snap of his fingers, alter the future of anyone he chooses.

Another LeVeque winner!
Revisado: 05-30-18
I am a long time Leveque follower. I normally have read the kindle edition prior to the audio version. However, this time I chose a story I had not read. Brad Wills is my favorite LeVeque narrator. His differing voices add such richness to his narrations. That, combined with my love of her stories, was a determining factor in choosing this novel. Ms. LeVeque's stories, plots & characters are always similar, yet in their own way uniquely different! I love the epilogues that usually are at the end, such a satisfying conclusion to her tales! My only complaint? The story was over too soon!

Disappointed
Revisado: 04-30-18
The writings of Tolkien have long been a favorite in our household. I read The Hobbit to my son when he was 6 months old. Despite the inaccuracies, even the Peter Jackson movies are a must watch series in our family movie collection. So, I can not fault the stories, however the same can not be said for the narrator. The story was completely ruined by his voices. A particularly offensive portrayal of Gollum. The vocalization of that character was like nails on a chalkboard, or the wail of a bannshee. I was looking forward to many hours of enjoyment from the audio version, what a terrible letdown.

Disappointing
Revisado: 04-01-18
I do not like to leave bad reviews & choose my purchases very carefully. I have been a fan of Kathryn Leveque's medieval tales since I first discovered her writings. My enjoyment has doubled by acquiring many on Audible. The narrator did a fine job with the material, sadly that could not compensate for the poor story. I felt it was more a recap of Christopher's story, than one devoted to David. It was a struggle to become involved & immersed as usually happens with this author's tales.

Another Levesque winner, Highly recommended
Revisado: 08-05-17
I an avid LeVeque devotee. Read all of her releases, then depending on the narrator, choose an audio copy. I am rarely disappointed, this one was no exception. Narrator did really well with distinguishing various characters and the accents. Thought Brighton's was very well done. I always love the linking of characters and families from book to book. It is like coming home. I am amazed at the depth of Kathryn's backgrounds and story links, a real master storyteller!
