Historia
McMillan begins with her family, tracking their modest wealth to its roots: American policy that helped whites first. Simultaneously, she details the complexities of their advantage, exploring her mother's death in a nursing home, at forty-four, on Medicaid; her family's implosion; and a small inheritance from a grandfather. In the process, McMillan puts a cash value to whiteness in her life and assesses its worth.

Fascinating and so educational
Revisado: 01-05-25
I appreciate this author’s ability to explain racism to her reader by sharing both her own story and the story of other Americans. The book is a powerfully written memoir interwoven with the biographies of a handful of people living within the American racial hierarchy. I am from southeast Michigan (her memoir’s setting) and found it so interesting to hear how racism was built into the development of this area.
In sum, I am walking away from this book with a continued depth of understanding of the evil of racism and its affect on all.

I’m so glad I found Liz!
Revisado: 12-03-23
This book is perfection. Its format was very obviously intentionally designed to be digested in small bits, which I love, because it gives me time to think about each chapter. I think Liz does a wonderful job of explaining the exact perfect amount of science behind the topic while simultaneously giving her readers an actionable step to take. I will be rereading this in the New Year to fine tune some of my habits. Perfect for gifts!

Historia
Malcolm Gladwell has long relished the opportunity to skewer the upper echelons of higher education, from the institution of U.S. News & World Report’s Best College rankings to the LSATs to the luxe Bowdoin College cafeteria. I Hate the Ivy League: Riffs and Rants on Elite Education, upends the traditional thinking around how education should work and tries to get to the bottom of why we often reward the wrong people.

He asks questions I never thought to ask
Revisado: 12-03-23
I appreciate that Malcom Gladwell is always asking the questions I never thought to ask. I always just make assumptions. For example, the Brown vs. Board of Educatjon explanations and analysis in this book seem so obvious but I never once thought about what happened to black teachers in the midst of integration. Bravo, Malcolm. I’m all for anything which aims to expose the privileged few in this country.

Will Guidara was twenty-six when he took the helm of Eleven Madison Park, a struggling two-star brasserie that had never quite lived up to its majestic room. Eleven years later, EMP was named the best restaurant in the world. How did Guidara pull off this unprecedented transformation? Radical reinvention, a true partnership between the kitchen and the dining room—and memorable, over-the-top, bespoke hospitality.

Essential Leadership Book
Revisado: 11-07-23
This book was exceptionally interesting to me as a teacher. I’m not connected to the restaurant industry in any way, but the author is such a passionate leader that I found so many of his ideas transferable to schools. Highly recommend for anyone who works with people.

Historia
Farnoosh Torabi is familiar with fear. Growing up in the 1980s as the daughter of Iranian immigrants, she was warned to always play it safe. She spent her childhood immersed in fear—of rejection, loneliness, missed opportunities, and falling short of her potential. Of course, now her mother says, “It all worked out, didn’t it?” Funnily enough, it did. Farnoosh came to the realization that fear never limited her. Instead, it has become a friend, opening her world and equipping her with the tools and street smarts to navigate life’s trials and thrive on her own terms.

This book is everything I wanted it to be!
Revisado: 10-10-23
Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright once said, “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.” On the contrary, I believe there’s a special place for women like Farnoosh Torabi, a woman who bravely and selflessly extends her hand to other women and says, “Follow me and take my hand. I will show you how to continue to empower yourself.”
This book is a beautiful extension of Farnoosh’s financial podcast, “So Money.” I’m exceptionally impressed with it because it goes much deeper than just the numbers and finance. It explores the psychology of fear and, rather than shaming the reader, encourages the reader to explore the fear and then use it as motivation to make change.
I’m so drawn to Farnoosh’s leadership and writing, especially her Iranian heritage and the advice given to her from her own parents. I appreciate her honesty and her ability to stand boldly in her convictions as opposed to chasing the latest social media trend.
My personal favorite chapter is the one on FOMO. It explored FOMO in a way I’ve never thought about. I even paused the audiobook at that point to reach out to Farnoosh herself on IG to tell her just that.
This book is one I will reread more than once. It offers timeless advice and is the perfect gift for anyone looking to continue growing as a human being.

I selected this book after hearing the author interviewed on the Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books podcast with Zibby Owens. I was captivated by her personality and the story she had to tell. Loved this one.
