Historia
With its brilliant and brutal portrayal of the Corleone family, The Godfather burned its way into our national consciousness. This unforgettable saga of crime and corruption, passion and loyalty continues to stand the test of time, as the definitive novel of the Mafia underworld. A #1 New York Times bestseller in 1969, Mario Puzo's epic was turned into the incomparable film of the same name, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It is the original classic that has been often imitated, but never matched.

"The Godfather", Father of a Genre
Revisado: 07-02-20
There's not much to be said that hasn't already by more knowledgeable folk.
The portrayal of women is a little dull, but the story overall shows a ruthless mastery of pacing, characterization, and world-building so prized by every writer.
The mental gymnastics employed and explored are a delight to read or hear, and a whole new joy can be discovered in twisting your brain to solve them, or even to playfully work your mind to make decisions in such a fashion.
Joe Mantegna's reading was wonderful, bringing his almost blasé way of performance to bear nicely.
There really isn't much else to say about one of the most beloved and picked-apart stories of a century.

The Story, As Familiar As Ever. The Narrator...
Revisado: 10-28-19
Well, we can't have it all. Still, despite the awkward, lackluster performance, I was still able to enjoy this familiar tale of a man and his way back to purpose.
The "Devlin Series", as my stepfather and I call it, is one of a kind in it's world-building elements, if not it's story altogether. The trope of the Chosen One is well-told, but this subverting of expectations- no, this new angle from which to view it, is wonderful for exploring concepts and story-telling.
Devlin is a wonderfully written character, his pain and his journey as harrowing as it is triumphant, as his inborn nature pulls him away from the brink and into the light of leadership. Stephen, his faithful friend, has some of the most lovely and subtle character development out there, and I can't wait to hear again their story and those of this whole host of delightful characters.

Historia
The man was gorgeous, sitting astride his Harley Davidson, mysteriously parked on a moonlit strip of sand. At thirty-seven, Christine Moore had a world-class case of burnout: career blues, no husband, no children, an imperfect figure, and dimming expectations. "I'm going to show you a peace so beautiful you'll probably forget what your life has been like up until now," he said. Who was this guy?

A New Way...
Revisado: 10-14-19
As someone raised Christian—whose views have radically changed as they've aged, mind—this is most certainly a story that came to me at the right time.
Exposing a bit if myself, I was cheated on not five months ago by the man I believed—and still do sometimes—was my soulmate. It shattered my worldview, and me as a person. Coming out of a lifetime of intermittent abuse and neglect, he seemed the answer to both my prayers, and my resilience to be a stronger, happier person. I hadn't been looking for him to fill a void, but he had anyway.
His loss still haunts me, but each day I crawl closer to that actualization of self I so crave, on my own terms though a new and healthier partner stands beside me.
This book is a short one, and I can listen to in in one sitting, as I will many times from here on out when the bad days and thoughts come for their dues. I'll find and forge my own commandments, and in the meantime take joy from other people's—and Christine's—successes, and my own mounting victories.
The future is scarier and brighter all at once, but I am stronger and wiser right along with it.

Terror For Somebody...
Revisado: 10-11-19
But not really for me. As a voracious consumer of horror, these four tales are the bits and pieces of bigger and better stories I've heard, standing alone. It's not bad, just tried and true.
Now, the acting and sound design were truly an artwork. Each person played their role impeccably, and truly with a skill that made me believe—THOSE were the cause of my goosebumps, in tandem with the truly inspired sound design. Based on those perks alone, this book os staying in my collection, and will be revisited.

The Beloved Ending...
Revisado: 10-04-19
The first time I read this book and finished it, I cried. Now that I've listened to it for the first time, I feel only eagerness and goosebumps. This is a story after my own life, speaking deeply to my soul and who I am. This is a story I will revisit over the course of my life, in any form, 'til the day I die.

The Beginning of the End...
Revisado: 09-20-19
I know these books well. Read them a hundred times over in the physical copies. Hearing them read has brought new dimensions and understandings to the forefront, and I go with great anticipation (and healthy dread, for I know of Seyonne's path) on to the next and final volume of this beautiful trilogy.

Historia
Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....

This is almost certainly meant for children, BUT
Revisado: 07-31-19
That did not in the least bit stop me from enjoying this performance! Sometimes, the background effects and other voices would pull me from the story, but in a sort of backwards, charming way, it only endeared the piece to me more.
I learned some surprising facts about history, particularly the Adidas vs. Puma shenanigans, which I had never heard of before at all!
I will certainly revist this fun, fascinating book again.

Historia
Most children go through a dinosaur phase. Learning all the tongue-twisting names, picking favourites based on ferocity, armour, or sheer size. For many kids this love of ‘terrible lizards’ fizzles out at some point between starting and leaving primary school. All those fancy names slowly forgotten, no longer any need for a favourite. For all those child dino fanatics who didn’t grow up to become paleontologists, dinosaurs seem like something out of mythology. They are dragons, pictures in books, abstract, other, extinct.

Fascinating!
Revisado: 07-29-19
I liked the presentation and passion put into this production, though I do think it might have been better suited as a documentary, and wonder if it is.
Regardless, I'm a huge history nerd and absolutely love any and all related to dinosaurs and other long-gone creatures. This book shall join the ranks of a fair few others to be consulted time and again for a bit of inspiration and wonder.

Historia
Seyonne is a man waiting to die. He has been a slave for 16 years, almost half his life, and has lost everything of meaning to him: his dignity, the people and homeland he loves, and the Warden's power he used to defend an unsuspecting world from the ravages of demons. Seyonne has made peace with his fate. With strict self-discipline he forces himself to exist only in the present moment and to avoid the pain of hope or caring about anyone.

The beginning of a story very dear to me...
Revisado: 07-25-19
I adore the Rai-kirah series. Alone, I have read it more times than I care to count.
Though the narrator is not who I would have chosen, and though he chose some... interesting accents, I cannot deny that I immensely enjoyed the whole experience and can't wait to listen to the other books in this series that captures, describes, and lives close in my heart and soul.
